NOISE/ALTERNATIVE/METAL. This album is by far one of the most original pieces of music you'll ever hear. These guys go above and beyond in creativity. Enthrallingly weird major label debut is a powerful, if tiring experience down the minds of musical madness. For a band that became synonymous with harnessing the true power of fragmentation, a slight majority of tracks here do not add up to a convincing experience, compounded greatly by the unfortunate enslavement to this evil circus theme they were going for at the time. Mr. BUNGLE, thank you for pounding the last nail into pop culture coffin. Be careful with this record. It will change the way your ears work.
PROTESTANT - antagonist (2009/HALO OF LIES) 7" 4,- €
HARDCORE. PROTESTANT deliver 3 tracks of exploding and brutal hardcore on this 7". Sure, there are the heavy and dark melodies over hard rhythms and thundering beats, but PROTESTANT are a lot more hardcore than that with their speed and aggressiveness. Where the main path here is in fact dark and powerful hardcore the music takes more than one turn with the occasional doom-laden riffs lurking around one corner and blastbeats around another. Spitting vocals, ravelling riffs, and an alternation and combination of the crushing rhythms and rapid deliverances makes the word powerful seem like an understatement with it comes to the three tracks on this 7". HARDCORE. We got some rare copies. This is a live radio recording REASON OF INSANITY did while on a East-Coast tour with Finnish heroes Rattus in 2004. The live recording was done in New Jersey and Brandon of DIRECT CONTROL/GOVERNMENT WARNING drummed for REASON OF INSANITY on this tour. The record is limited to 300 ever and there are a few exclusive tunes only available on this record, and for a live recording, although live in studio, the record sounds very good, but good in a true punk way.

PSYCHEDELLIC-ROCK. San Francisco's ASSEMBLE HEAD IN SUNBURST SOUND is a soundtrack for strange days and futures bright and bleak. But there is also a crooked thread that runs backward through every record from them. The celestial trajectories of THE NOTORIOUS BYRD BROTHERS and circa '70 PINK FLOYD; the dusty canyon stomps of CRAZY HORSE, slashing action pop of the savage young WHO and the scuzz-bomb shrapnel of latter-day garage mongers like MUDHONEY. The music of ISIS is a suitable metaphor for their 12-year career: patient, meticulous, fraught with tension and gradually building towards an apex of seismic proportions. ISIS have been making waves in the underground rock scene by pioneering a slow, droning, slightly metallic sound that has been evolving into atmospheric, layered and ambient noise. If radio still exists in 30 years, "wavering radiant" is the kind of record that obsessive DJs will play in its entirety during their graveyard shifts. But the huddled mass of ISIS enthusiasts is already celebrating its arrival. DoLP comes as usual in an eyecatching gatefold sleeve.

INDIE-ROCK. PINK MOUNTAINTOPS, side-project of BLACK MOUNTAIN frontman McBean, unites a heap of his Canadian/indie music peers and BLACK MOUNTAIN coconspirators in an effort to aid in his exper-romantic vision, the velvet swaddled novel on "outside love's" cover as amusing as it is appropriate. But "outside love" does make its point. McBean ain't all about the big guitars. He's a man of space and atmosphere, first and foremost. And none of his bands, the BLACK MOUNTAIN rock juggernaut included, would work without his ability to layer sounds into a beautiful swelling sound.
