7“
THE AGENDA Pessimism Of The Mind, Optimism Of The Will 7" (fashnioable iditos - On their second 7", Minneapolis, MN's The Agenda speed things up a little, injecting more urgency into their already sloppy, raw, early-'80s inspired hardcore punk that isn't afraid to get zany.) 5.00
CANADIAN RIFLE / AMERICAN CHEESEBURGER SPLIT 7" (rock bottom - Split 7" by these two bands who share a similar name, but very little musically. American Cheeseburger play dense, thrashing hardcore with some metallic guitar licks thrown in... maybe that description doesn't sound great on paper, but this is fucking raging stuff. Canadian Rifle return with two tracks of their Leatherface-influenced punk... I fucking hate the "Gainesville" sound, so don't worry... this is a LOT better than anything on No Idea. Awesome to see two such different bands paired together, especially since these are two of the best live bands I've seen in the past few years. Rock Bottom Records.) 5.00
AUTISTIC YOUTH empty eyes 7" (black water - Fucking killer single from this Portland band. Did you love the Observers but were a little iffy on the Red Dons? Yeah, me too... well, Autistic Youth sound like all the things that got lost in the transition between those two bands. I'd even say I like this better than all but a couple of Observers songs. Dark, melodic, and instantly memorable... you need this. Black Water Records.) 5.00
BITTER END same 7" (malfuntion - Bitter End are an intense hardcore band from San Antonio, Texas influenced by the metallic New York hardcore bands of the late '80s and early '90s. This latest effort, a three song self-titled 7" EP, shows Bitter End evolving and sharpening their technical ability and song writing power. Both full tracks "Power Struggle" and "Purgatory" clock in at over four and five bludgeoning minutes respectively. Each song twists and turns with dynamic riffing, potent vocals/lyrics, and bone shaking breakdowns, proving that Bitter End are growing to be true leaders, not followers, in the metallic hardcore sub-genre. 7"comes with free digital download coupon.) 5.00
BORIS statement 7" (southern lord – we got some copies bakc in stock. - Boris returns with their first non-collaborative recordings in 2 years! The new track “Statement” is a preview of things to come on their forthcoming full-length album: “Smile” to be released by Southern Lord in April of this year! The B side of this 7_: “Floorshaker” is exclusive to this vinyl and will NOT be available anywhere else. Pressing is limited to 3,000 copies total. The two tracks here are a appropriate progression from the sounds and direction on the last studio full-length: Pink. Dont miss out on this one!) 5.00
CHEAP TRAGEDIES same 7" (no idea - Tony Erba of Face Value, Gordon Solie Motherfuckers, Nine Shocks Terror, etc. returns to the mic with Cheap Tragedies, whose other members also did time in Committed, Names For Graves, Holy Fucking Crap, Iron Teeth and The Lovekill, but pick up where GSMF left off, playing fast hardcore punk including two covers of the classic '80s Cleveland, OH band The Guns.) 4.50
DIAGONAL Heavy Language 7" (rise above - Debut release from this exciting new Brighton-based band. In its direct and militant approach to freeform-thinking progressive rock, Diagonal are giving the term ‘Prog’ a coolness which the media never allowed. One million times more challenging than a ten-billionth weary rendition of any three minute ‘Punk Rock’ song you can be bothered to mention, Diagonal throw two fingers back with supreme musical defiance. Here is a mere taster of what's to come on the Liam Watson-produced forthcoming debut album later in the year. The tracks here are non-album tracks) 6.00
FOUNDATION Never Stops Raining 7" (triple b - Atlanta, GA's Foundation pick right up where they left off from their debut 7", bringing two tracks of heavy, '90s-inspired hardcore that not only takes influence from classic bands like Strife, Undertow and Trial, but also come along the same lines as 2008 favorites I Rise and Soul Control.) 4.50
CROWNING GLORY/ GATES OF SLUMBER split 7" (rise above - Heavy traditional doom on one split 7") 6.00
HARMS WAY Imprisoned 7" (organized crimes - Harms Way feature members of Few And The Proud, Weekend Nachos and Sidewalk and play a heinous barrage of thrashing powerviolence with plenty of dirge and sludge mixed in, bringing to mind bands like Hellnation and Crossed Out.) 5.00
HEWHOCORRUPTS Microeconomics 7" (giled media - Originally released on a CD shaped like a credit card packaged in a wallet, these songs are now available again as a one-sided 7", with a pie chart screenprinted on the B-side, and your credit card receipt as an insert, continuing the businesslike tradition of these Chicago, IL grinders.) 5.00
HOMOSTUPIDS cat music 7“ (fashnionable idiots - Homostupids are back with yet another 7" of loose, raw, noisy garage punk with members of 9 Shocks Terror that prays at the same altar of The Jesus Lizard and maybe The Mummies, kind of like Clockcleaner and Pissed Jeans.) 5.00
IRON AGE The Way Is Narrow b/w Satori Part 1 7" (painkiller - On "The Way Is Narrow," Iron Age venture further into the realm of metal, trudging through two tracks of thunderous metallic hardcore with wailing lead guitars including the track "The Way Is Narrow" backed with a cover of "Satori Part 1" by the legendary Flower Travellin' Band.) 5.00
KAOSPILOT for yoru safety 7“ (nova – warehouse find. We got a couple of their first 7inch) 4.00
LADIES same 7“ (riff raff - Richmond, VA's THE LADIES are the newest project from the infamous Tony Bitch, who you might remember from older bands like the Dirty Fingers and Bad Advice. The Ladies play fucking nasty bad attitude punk at hardcore tempos, sort of like the Dwarves' fastest, most hardcore-influenced stuff. Definitely a keep of an EP if you can keep yourself from getting offended. Riff Raff Records. Limited to 500 copies.) 4.50
LOGIC PROBLEM same 7“ (sorry state - Following up their well-received 2007 demo, the debut EP from North Carolina's Logic Problem is like a split 7" between two sides of the band. The A-side, recorded by Myriam Martian and -/-EPIC WARFARE-/- (Double Negative's "Raw Energy" EP), is a rough-and-ready DIY job with harsh, clipped vocals and a mean distorted bass tone, perfectly suiting the more atmospheric songs on that side of the record... just imagine Articles Of Faith playing through the Jesus And Mary Chain's equipment. The B-side, on the other hand, features two tracks of complex and catchy hardcore with a cleaner, yet still powerful, pro recording. These tracks recall the Stooges' sonic wall of intensity "Raw Power" fed into frenetic, crushing hardcore punk.) 5.00
LOW VISION Touch The Truth 7" (625 records - Japan's Low Vision bring four tracks of fast, energetic hardcore that takes influence from bands like Youth Of Today and Gorilla Biscuits as well as faster Japanese thrash bands like Breakfast, Fasts and Jellyroll Rockheads.) 4.50
MMCIII - Self-Titled 7" (ash from sweat - Two new songs from Denver’s mastermind songwriter. After a handful of self-released cassettes and CD-R, we offer this great debut on vinyl format. After his band split for Portland, MMCIII kept the full band aesthetic by getting creative with loop stations and beats to compliment his strangely melodic tunes.) 4.50
MUDBOY 'MuDMuX Volume One' 7" (dnt - This is the first installment of a series of 7"'s to be released by various labels. Each record contains a single track on each side by a different band- produced, mixed, orchestrated, destroyed, mutilated and brought back to life by the dark dreams of Mr. mudboy. Side A of this first edition features an unearthed file by the Extreme Animals resurrected as a tribute to "Lil John Carpenter." Percussion by Jeremy Lazy "animal" Magnet Harris. Side B is a devastating whirlpool cliff walk based on a song written and sung by the DarkDarkDark band. Backup fingers by Alec K Redfearn of the Eyesores fame." Cover art is a hand made blue and gold 4 pass silkscreen by R Lyon in collaboration with Kevin Hooyman. Limited to 535.) 5.00
NARROWS same 7" (deathwish - Narrows are comprised of a seasoned cast of musicians: Dave Verellen (Botch, Roy), Rob Moran (Unbroken, Some Girls), Ryan Fredereksen (These Arms Are Snakes), Jodie Cox (Tropics, Bullet Union) and Sam Stothers (Makeout Boys, Quarantine). With an overdriven/soaked bass, ghost land guitar work, brooding drums and a shrapnel laced voice, Narrows prove they are built for the dark lands we live in. In these three remarkable songs, Narrows transcend the tired sub-genres of hardcore/punk/metal and leave their own unforgettable musical scar, proving that they are the celebrated past, awe inspiring present, and infectious future of today's heavy music community.) 5.00
OBSTRUCTION same 7" (lunchbox - Back in the early '80s the few Charlotte hardcore punk bands (No Rock Stars and The Wogs immediately spring to mind) were never able to make a record and thus get left out of most of those books and movies now appearing about that time period. Similarly, the thrash revival of the '00s has also barely registered a blip about Charlotte bands. Hopefully, this debut 7" ep by Obstruction will be the first shot fired and not a lone blast in the darkness. If you've heard their demo CDR let me just say that this recording blows that one completely out of the water. I've always liked seeing the band live, but until I heard this recording I didn't appreciate them as fully as I do now. Playing this record over and over I found myself thinking that this reminded me of early '80s DC hardcore. This prompted me to play part of The Faith side of the Faith/Void LP, but, no, that wasn't quite it. Then I played The Faith's second, and sadly, last record, The Subject To Change ep, and that's where I heard the similarities. Somewhere around 1983 the remaining DC bands (certainly Minor Threat's Out of Step comes to mind) started to stretch the boundaries of hardcore in new ways so that while it was still thrash it was no longer just playing as fast as you could. Other influences were creeping in and being shaped to fit the hardcore mold. That was an amazing period for this style of music, but, unfortunately, it ended much too soon. Obstruction sound like they have studied this period quite well and are intent on adding to this body of music by putting their own unique stamp on it. I'm sold.) 4.50
SPLITTING HEADACHE the worlds my aim 7“ (chainsaw - The New Jersey quintet returns with a new 7” as their Chainsaw Safety debut. SPLITTING HEADACHE combines the classic elements of West Coast punk /hardcore with the despondent sound of the Midwest early 80s sound. Six new songs about everything that’s not right in this world: and that’s just about everything!) 4.50
STEEL TRAP / TRASH TALK split 7" (spiderghost gang - Steel Trap and Trash Talk are two of NorCals most promising young bands, each delivering their own style of unrelenting hardcore fury that combines both traditional hardcore, punk rock, and metal in that unbridled fashion that is so unique to the legendary Northern California hardcore scene. Steel Trap play heavy, breakdown-laden hardcore akin to Biohazard and Terror with Trash Talk taking cues from faster bands like Outbreak.) 5.00
STRANGERS DIE EVERY DAY AND JOSEPH CHILDRESS split 7" (ash from sweat - he Strangers play bass/drum/cello instrumental rock, with an always changing cast of players on violins. Haunting and uplifting, and impressively dense for having only one electric instrument. Joe Childress donated one song from a vast collection of self-released and unreleased gems. The label’s first non-local release.) 4.50
SYN*ERROR / WHAT PRICE OF WONDERLAND split 7" (bear records - Such a great release with two great bands! If you know them this is a must have release! If you don't know them, get to know them because you will love them! And you will see them again!) 4.50
USED KIDS same 7" (salinas records - Playing classic American rock 'n' roll, Brooklyn's Used Kids feature members of The Ergs!, Modern Machines and Cheeky and keep things upbeat on this 7", not only taking influence from power pop and punk bands but also from classic songwriters like Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.) 4.50
V/A COUNTER CULTURE 7" (coalition - A Benefit compilation for several grass-root human right organizations in Indonesia. The music on this 7" is provided by DS13 (Sweden), SLANG (Japan), END 32 (Indonesia), THE SWARM (Canada). All songs are exclusive and don’t appear on other records. Besides the music, the package contains a 24 paged booklet filled with articles about local political issues and struggles in Indonesia. Think globally, act locally is a widespread slogan, and this record is an effort to put words into deeds.) 4.00
VAN JOHNSON Ladies And Gentlemen 7" (exf – back in stock - The classic smash hit single format (two songs on 45 RPM) for the hottest motherfuckers in rock today! Van Johnson are from Ottawa, Canada and rock just as hard as they like to party. And yup, it's that hipster screamo thing - nothing too original or groundbreaking, but if that's what I wanted in the first place, I wouldn't listen to punk rock anymore. Van Johnson just fuck shit up and look damn good while they do it. And they know to move a booty or twenty. There's ripping guitars, thrashing drum beats, a thundering bass and screaming vocals, and you know you'll like it if you dig bands like Orchid, Off Minor and Portraits Of Past. At least that's what they've been compared to.) 4.00
WRAITH same 7" gatefold (reflections - To many people most likely an unknown band… We’ll promise you that will change soon! Wraith origins from Cardiff, United Kingdom with a collective mindset of dishing out the most devastatingly crushing music they could envoke on mankind, with the gear to back it up they plan to level the playing field and bring forth HELL to whomever will have them playing their abode.
All band members served their time in bands that have seen some form of recognition in their own restricted genres but see it as no bearing on what Wraith are doing. These guys backed themselves with enough equipment to lay waste to any non-beleivers and leave them with a serious ear ringing… If the likes of Neurosis, Discharge and Joy Division are in your recordcollection then Wraith might floor you!) 5.00
V/A PDX comp 7" (black water - You'd think a 7" compilation of Portland bands would be full of dark crust punk, but Black Water Records shows us a different a different side of the fertile scene in that town. Includes exclusive tracks from Sleepwalkers R.I.P., the Estranged, Autistic Youth and Nix... everything here RULES and fits beautifully in the tradition of Portland punk from the Wipers to the Observers. Highly recommended.) 4.50
LP
AMANDA ROGERS heartwood LP (expect candy - "Heartwood", the title of Amanda Rogers 6th solo record release, is an impressive follow-up to her 2005 e.p. release, "Something Borrowed, Something Blue". After spending 2 years on the road in a veg-powered r.v., writing and performing with a rock n' roll band, her new found poise and confidence is very much apparent on this latest record. "Heartwood" is a polished and yet raw recording showcasing Roger's skills as a clever lyricist, versatile songwriter, and impassioned songstress.) 13.50
ATTAR CUPS untitled LP (blackest rainbow - We hit up our fourth vinyl release with this beauty which was originally intended to be a cassette only release (it still will be available on cassette, but only in a tiny run). This Maine based crew features a host of psychedelic jam talent... Nemo of Drona Parva and head honcho of Time-Lag Records, Sparrow Wildchild of The Bummer Road, and the three members of Visitations, whose record on Time-Lag last year was one of 2007's best! So this is the second recording from this crew, the first being last years Sloow Tape. This beast is different to the Sloow vibe, still with a super nice jam band sound, but projecting to a maybe more 'song' (in the loosest possible way) based plane, a little like Visitations." Edition of 299 hand numbered copies with zero info and 11" x 11" stickers on the front and back of black sleeves.) 14.00
BENEDICTION killing music LP nuclear blast records - It's easy to forget about the spot that Benediction occupies in the English extreme metal lexicon. While it's true that they haven't exactly been prolific over the last several years, their third full-length, _Transcend the Rubicon_, still stands out as a death metal classic, not to mention the fact that Napalm Death's Barney Greenway once featured as their chief larynx-shredder_Killing Music_ comes at us some six years after their last studio outing and it's instantly lent an additional layer of menace, simply by virtue of Anaal Nathrakh's Dave Hunt being present in the vocal booth. Sticking to more traditional death metal growling as opposed to the unhinged shrieking exhibited in his other musical guise, he imbues each track on this record with a level of aggression easily spiking far above anything to bear the Benediction logo previously. The band themselves have also sharpened their act up some. Still sticking vehemently to their old school mantra, songs like "They Must Die Screaming" and "Wrath & Regret" boast hooks a-plenty -- enough to make what could so easily have ended up as a fairly tawdry slab of vintage death metal be consistently engaging from start to finish.) 16.00
BLACK DOVE no future no fate LP (solar funeral - Black Dove's debut vinyl, 45 RPM 12"LP of heavy & raw hardcore metal punk. 4 new ones and all 5 from the limited demo cassette re-done. Recorded on 2" analog tape at Mars studio, this is in a similar vein to bands like Martyrdod, Nuclear Death Terror, Hellshock..) 11.50
CAN'T Private Time Part 2 LP (weird forest - For me this is the ultimate Can't LP. Its a sound cornucopia of everything Jessica Rylan does so beautifully... amazing scraped and destroyed analog synth-laden vocals, lovely singer/songwriter stylings with acoustic guitar, and Shaggs-style garage gusto! This record features Jessica's own homemade synthesizers including the Little Boy Blue! One of my favorite Weird Forest releases to date! Beautiful color covers by Abide Visuals and a fabulous inner sleeve with artwork by Jessica.) 15.00
CEREMONY still nothing moves you LP (bridge nine - Relentlessly touring for the last three years, Ceremony made a name for themselves with chaotic and violent live shows. Ceremony makes no statements of who they are or what they're trying to be. They are their own powerful and unique force in the world of punk - it's an alluring, challenging, ugly middle finger to those who call themselves rebellious. Now available on colored vinyl with a gatefold cover.) 12.00
CONOR OBERST same LP (merge - This recording was made in Tepozitan, Morelos, Mexico during the months of January and February 2008. The result is Conor Oberst's first solo album in thirteen years, following "Water" (1993), "Here's To Special Treatment" (1994), and "Soundtrack To My Movie" (1995). In that time he has recorded and performed in many bands and musical projects including Commander Venus, Park Ave., Desaparecidos, and most notably Bright Eyes, his main musical vehicle for the past decade. Vinyl version includes free download of the entire album.) 18.50
CROSS EXAMINATION Menace II Sobriety LP (organized crime - Cross Examination can be seen on interstates around the country doing intervantinental beer bongs at 88 miles per hour in between vans (note: the drivers do not participate), and even smashing the hell out of their van, lovingly named Crusher, and subsequently destroying it on the side of interstate 55 en route to Chicago. While these crazy antics are entertaining, Cross Examination's notorious reputation and undisputed sense of humor has helped them grow a serious fan base (also known as the Awesome Party Squad) and upwards of 50,000 YouTube views of their everyday lifestyle. Cross Examination will be trampling the United States throughout 2008 in support of "Menace II Sobriety" and the Awesome Party Squad will be circle pitting and beer bonging right along with them. Now available on colored vinyl. Vinyl version includes free comic book and digital download.) 12.50
DAITRO/ SED NON SATIATA split LP (US PRESS) (code of ethics - Daitro deliver their best tunes to date of emotive french hardcore - One the best bands today that see their band also as an instrument to deliver political statements and thoughts ... pathetic More Then Just Music. I love them and if you haven't heard of them yet - go and check them out! On the flipside SED NON SATIATA (rip) surprised me a lot w/ their new songs. They got much more melodic and interesting on this Lp. Its more driven and powerful. Reminds me on Fingerprint w/ a more melodic edge) 11.50
DISMEMBER same Lp (regain records - Dismember is a fat sweaty middle finger to bands wimping out. The tour promoters, publicists, commercial magazines and merchandisers have their Entombeds and Tiamats, but death metal fanatics who know have Dismember. Is this album the definitive release by the Swedish five given its self-titled swagger? Probably not, but who cares about semantics if one is about to be cut into pieces by eleven tracks of blistering death metal like this. The Dismember distortion speed rockets like its 1991, although the band is clearly not standing still. The melodic solos and rhythms do find a home here again, albeit not to the same extent as the last two albums of the band. Death Conquers All is a neat little title to kick off the album and it is serious business. Slow songs don’t work here, or in this context, and Europa Burns is weaker as a result. Nonetheless, the tempo helps clarify the subject matter: World War I. Iron Maiden is back with the more melodic Under A Bloodred Sky, a title which is reminiscent of Dreaming In Red from the band’s Indecent & Obscene record. The song is crunchy and surely features the album’s most memorable rhythm. The Hills Have Eyes is the uninterrupted follow-up. Tide Of Blood might be a literal title, which features dual soloing by the guitarists whereas Combat Fatigue has a mean riff. To End It All is truly pounding. Unfortunately, No Honor In Death is one of the slower moments that doesn’t work and Dark Depths is a filler which spoils the album’s progress towards its end.) 16.00
DUSTHEADS Little Pieces LP (don giovanni - Dustheads bring their first full-length worth of material on "Little Pieces," taking cues from Black Flag, drugs and depression to create the feel bad record of the year.) 12.00
ELECTRIC WIZARD/ REVEREND BIZARRE split 12" (rise above - Electric Wizard/Reverend Bizarre is a split 12" EP released by the English doom metal band Electric Wizard and the Finnish doom band Reverend Bizarre. The Reverend Bizarre song is a cover of Finnish black metal band Beherit. The Electric Wizard track is exclusive to this release. Limited to 2000 copies) 12.00
ELOE OMOE marauders LP (animal disguise - Eloe Omoe is the Boston, MA duo of Sam Rowell (Bass) and Tim Leanse (Drums). For the uninitiated and other strangers to Eloe Omoe's aural assault, can be described as relentless 'free-sludge.' Their challenging and rewarding sound could be compared to both the depths of early free-jazz and the over-the-top amplifier worshipping metal of the legendary godheadSilo. But more than anything, the music is akin to the unpredictable shift of a group of sharks than to normal song structure. An album that reveals more subtleties and gets better with each listen, Marauders is an impressive debut that has been long overdue.) 13.50
ERIN TOBEY same LP (bakery outlet - If I were to describe Erin's music like a white coat wearing professor of musicology, I would say that the she creates songs that are sometimes beautiful, shy and fragile, and at other times are self-assured, powerful declarations on what it is to be alive. Erin does a great job conveying the emotion of love through well thought lyrics, and sparse, almost ghostly instrumentation. For the most part, the recording is just a space-echoed voice, and a cleanly fingerpicked Danelectro guitar. But Erin adds many subtle touches like air organs, ukeleles, and the occasional sound of a distant, marching snare drum. Also, Rich Diem of Twelve Hour Turn plays slide guitar, and contributes a little singing to the album. People might know of Erin from her other bands, Abe Froman and Mt. Gigantic, or perhaps from Here It Is zine. She is a very talented person in art, music, and in life. I wish the best for Erin, and I hope that everyone loves this album as much as I do." --Lenny Rutland (Bakery Outlet Records))12.50
EXTORTION sick LP (deep six - Extortion once again set out to make ears bleed with 15 tracks of pure powerviolence that worships at the altar of bands like Crossed Out, Neanderthal and Infest. Their songs whip up into a frenzy of blast beats and growls and slow down into agonizing sludge bits.) 11.50
THE FAINT Fasciinatiion DLP (blank wave - Fasciinatiion," The Faint's fifth album, is the first in the band's ten-year history to be written, recorded, produced, designed and released entirely on their own. It continues on with the band's brand of electronic, dancewave music that not only takes from the '80s goth scene, but incorporates modern indie rock elements. Now available on vinyl with a gatefold cover.) 18.50
FAMILY UNDERGROUND Black Hole 2xLP (weird forest - Family Underground drenched the east coast of the USA in molten syrup last year and they toted along a tour CD-R entitled Black Hole released by the fine folk of Secret Eye. Mega bummed I didn't get to feel their magic live but I ordered that tour disc post-haste. Man, when I got it I was slain. I thought it was their finest work to date so I had to invoke it on vinyl. I tapped into the band's communication network and together we figured this would make a killer double LP, definitely one for the record books. So The Underground sent me a half hour of unreleased musics to fill the vinyl sides to fruition. Holy Hannah was I unprepared for A! How well the new jams mind-melded with the other tracks. And B — the superb variation of the entire work with paramount peaks and deep arcane valleys. Get it and trip!) 19.00
FAMILY UNDERGROUND helium bug 12" (DNT - Denmark's drone demons release another one. A helium rug would float, which is exactly what your melted mind will do while listening to this record. Whistling blown by the birds of hell. This has been in the works for quite some time. Originally intended to come out last summer on their US tour, but we didn't want to flood the market (they already had 3 LPs coming out the same time). Edition of 300 on black vinyl with bi-color stencil. The front cover is what you will look like after listening to this. Your mind will split open unleashing the helium rug from within. Artwork by Zachary Fleming) 13.50
FISTULA/ MODORRA split LP (boil - Great new split LP w/ new tunes by both down temp bands) 11.00
THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM The '59 Sound LP (side one dummy - The Gaslight Anthem have gone from basements in their hometown of New Brunswick, New Jersey to one of underground music's most celebrated acts in barely over a year, through tours with Against Me!, The Loved Ones and The Bouncing Souls, bringing a sound that reconciles the band's love for classic rock and soul icons such as Bruce Springsteen, Otis Redding and Tom Petty with their New Jersey punk roots to create a unique musical amalgam that transcends genres and stereotypes.) 13.50
GAUZE - BINBOU YUSURI NO RIZUMU NI NOTTE" LP (prank - The Fifth LP from Tokyo, Japanese Hardcore legends, GAUZE. Since 1981 GAUZE have played some of the world's most intense hardcore punk, and at this point might hold the title of the World's greatest continually playing, original 1980's hardcore band. A "Living tradition" of Japanese hardcore that has never mellowed with age, GAUZE have played monthly in Tokyo for 27 years, devoting most of their energy to their live performances. Many of their songs are hammered out at their Live shows long before their sporadic recorded releases (their last release was ten years ago!). GAUZE's songs just seem to get FASTER with each record, and the blinding ten tracks here are no exception. Issued in Japan in late 2007 as a CD- only release, this is one of GAUZE's rawest recording yet and it's first appearance on vinyl.) 12.00
HEXLOVE/ FAULOUHA Free Jazz From Slavery 2xLP (weird forest - If one were dim enough to go about explaining the new double LP from Hexlove/Faulouah by pointing up parallels between it and the future-thinking music which has surely influenced its creator, I imagine the task wouldn’t be too daunting. One may first notice that Free Jazz from Slavery is awash in the sublimely complex percussion patterns of 20th century composers like Harry Partch, Eugene Kurtz, and Iannis Xenakis. Or one might wonder if Zac Nelson, the man in the cockpit of this thing, hadn’t been listening to Another Green World since he was in the womb. And certainly it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that the jibing spirit of early-eighties Pere Ubu experimentation is all over the more flippant efforts like Don’t Say I Didn’t Warm Yah and the watery blurb that opens the record, Aztec vs. Dolphin. This, though, is the wrong way to go about listening to or talking about any of Hexlove/Faulouah’s work. Musical ancestors are worn proudly on Nelson’s sleeve, but as eagerly as he celebrates them, he also delights in taking them, along with himself, down a peg. The snarky punning of the album’s title, the faux-shamanic chanting and cooing, the deliberately murked-up and buzzing arrangements all belie an agenda that involves not only a glad embrace of the less austere reaches of avant-gardism but a pointed critique of its elitism and intellectual posturing. Tracks like the doom-laden Lots of Wings Carry Seeds, which pulses like the metabolism of some slumbering extinct beast, display a staggering sense of grey beauty but are quickly undercut when Nelson begins to take a more blithe and self-deprecating tack. This, though, is not to the record’s detriment; it never falls into mere novelty or self-parody. The sheer technical brilliance, evident on every track, earns quite a big spot on Nelson’s cheek to put his tongue in. The most glorious moments, though, are those in which he is able to marry these two tendencies, as on the desperate and busy Grump up the Volume, which opens the second side of the first record. And this is just the first record.) 18.50
HOT WATER MUSIC forever and counting LP (no idea - The third full-length by this Gainesville, Florida band known for awesome live shows, beards and constant touring. Hot Water music are an awesome mix of Avail, Fuel and Leatherface. Now available again on colored vinyl.) 11.50
HUMANFLY / QUEEN OF SWORDS - split LP (electric earth records – With almost polar stylistic approaches each of these projects develops an apocalyptic sound of epic proportions. For fans of Neurosis, Jesu, Isis,…) 11.50
INCA ORE Brute Nature Vs. Wild Magic LP (weird forest - Inca Ore is the solo voice of Eva, the singer of such fine bands as Alarmist and Malibu Falcon. Inca Ore travels the cosmos on firey phoenix mattresses with the voice of a goose-quilled cloud pillow siren calling to all the constellations in the universe. Eva uses her vocal range and delay complement to create the sounds of entire sorceress covens through her lone voice. Lovely psychedelic drone mixed with narcoleptic folk. An enchantress of the highest order! Side A was previously issued as a CD-R in a small pressing of 100 copies on the Collective Jyrk label. The b-side is a brand new track consisting of one astounding, 18-minute interstellar vocal trance-out!) 15.00
JESU FUCKING CHRIST life’s hateful seed LP (immivcal - Building on their Poison Idea meets the Accused sound, JESUS FUCKING CHRIST has added some metallic flourishes with a thicker guitar sound and some intense and heavy mid tempo sections. Dave Ed’s (Neurosis) handled the production in house this time around. Dave's voice is more prominent on many of the tracks, going from backing vocals to a full second vocalist. Larry’s guitar work has only gotten more intense with the addition of occasional frantic punk rock solos throughout the album. Lyrically, the songs lash out at everything from punk scene politics and institutions to co-workers and the city they are from while always remaining firmly in the negative. All in all, this album accomplishes what any excellent second album does: builds and expands on the framework set by the first and never disappoints. Limited to 666 copies) 12.50
L ANTIETAM arthur carr 12" (slave union -
LIFETIME same LP (repress) (no idea - With their first full length since 1997's "Jersey's Best Dancers," Lifetime return for another eleven tracks of pure emotional melodic hardcore fun. Dr. Dan Yemin continues to write all the material as he has done in Kid Dynamite and Paint It Black, and Ari Katz returns to the helm with his signature vocals that helped influence everyone from Saves The Day to Rise Against. Now available again on colored vinyl.) 11.50
MAMMAL lonesome drifter DLP (animal disguise - Surprising foray by one of my personal noise kings into bleeding-slow doom metal songs. There's even some fuzzed-out baritone singing here & there. A gentler way to erase-your-face than the 'Fog' days, & comes with luscious pencil shaded drawing that I wish was a giant poster I could hang on my ceiling. Tracklisting: Repulsion, Fatherlands, Cyclops, The Drift, Drifter in the City, Incinerator Ballad, Lower Depths, Cremation.) 19.50
MIASMA & THE CAROUSEL OF HEADLESS HORSES perils LP (rise above - Features members of Guapo, Chrome Hoof, Aethenor and Cathedral! Entirely instrumental but still seeming to tell a story, Perils features all kinds of distorted screaming and disembodied laughter to add to its Halloween carnivalesque atmosphere. Such gimmicks are hardly the centerpiece of the music, though; strong compositions abound, with pounding piano laying hypnotic backdrops for twisting (and often surprisingly lyrical) violin and guitar passages. There are a few noisy freakouts here and there, but by and large this is quite an accessible piece of work, with head-nodding rhythms and hummable, addictive melodies. Most remarkable, of course, is the atmosphere of it all: oppressive and creepy, but in a more playful way than the dead-serious Guapo. If Univers Zero's Heresie is music for dark, near-abandoned haunted houses, Perils is music for dress-up Halloween parties in old Gothic college dorms.) 17.50
MOHO Chotacabra LP (beat generation - MOHO from Madrid/Spain is a three piece juggernaut of dirt head rock fury - so ferocious they give seasoned rockers like HIGH ON FIRE, EYEHATEGOD, ELECTRIC WIZARD and GRIEF a serious run for the (drug) money. "Chotacabra" is a furious groovy sludge rock jam, a stoned stumble through the garden at midnight. Many of the songs start with big fat riffs, slowly building into some serious sludgy groove, drifting way off, gradually working up to a loping midtempo, before dragging it back down into the murk. Comes with gatefold cover and on thick vinyl!) 13.00
MOUNT EERIE “Lost Wisdom” LP (pw elvrum - The music of Mount Eerie has taken many forms (see: The Microphones) but it is always made by Phil Elverum. Lost Wisdom is an album that finds Elverum in a more collaborative mode than usual, working with two legends of music and kindred spirits, Julie Doiron and Fred Squire. Elverum and Doiron share vocal duties almost equally on the record, making it an album comprised of dark pop duets.
This time the songs were recorded quickly and quietly during a surprise visit by Julie Doiron, keeper of the world’s greatest and saddest voice, and Fred Squire, hidden guitarist of the floating riff, in a small wooden room in Anacortes, Washington before they returned home to eastern Canada.
10 songs with the expression of the face of a baby in a burning world, in the swirling dust. More overtly personal and emotional than usual (which is saying something), these songs hang on a theme of impermanence and destroying forces. Sample lyrics: “Every single shape I see for the pile of dust it is. Let’s get out of the romance.” and “Newborn babies come to life on my face, and they say ‘ta daa!’” The river is revealed to be going right through the house, the river of inevitable chaos, sorrow and love.
It’s worth noting that this is a dream-come-true collaboration for Elverum. Julie Doiron has been his favorite singer since his teenage brain was exploded by the music of her legendary band Eric’s Trip in the early nineties. They are basically the reason he is playing music at all. Now the full circle feeback loop quietly feeds back in these 10 beautiful songs. Mount Eerie with Julie Doiron & Fred Squire 12” with giant poster (white vinyl)) 18.00
MOUNT EERIE “Dawn” LP (pw elvrum - The same songs as the ones on the book/CD from Buenaventura Press, but on vinyl, no book. Just a record. all the songs written in a cabin in northern Norway. played once and for all on just guitar and singing. 19 songs. Beautiful - The music of “Mount Eerie” and “The Microphones” has always been a very personal, almost voyeuristic, view inside the mind of Phil Elverum. Dawn is an archival core sample from an intensely creative period of Elverum’s life, the winter of 2002/2003 spent in arctic Norway, a kind of “lost album” finally properly recorded on just guitar and singing.
Simple white vinyl LP of those songs along with a special booklet of scary self portraits done in the dark window reflection in overflowing ink, vaguely corresponding to the overflowing darkness in the 19 songs.) 18.00
MOUTH OF THE ARCHITECT Quietly DLP (colored) (at a loss records - Ohio's Mouth Of The Architect continue to bring a massive, monolithic sound with eight tracks clocking in at 56 minutes. Their brand of slowed down, atmospheric metal with howled vocals brings to mind later-era Neurosis, Isis or even the heavier moments of Mogwai.) 23.50
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS From The Bottom LP LP (no ideaMinneapolis, MN's punk rock heroes Off With Their Heads continue their prolific songwriting with "From The Bottom" which showcases the band's ability to write catchy, poppy rock and roll songs with witty lyrics and a serious influence from other Twin Cities party animals Dillinger Four.) 11.50
PLANKS same LP (narshardaa - Nice dark and heavy apocalypstic hc/punk which reminds us of old Narshardaa releases like Arsen and Angstzustand includes modern HC like, Old Man Gloom, Coliseum or Isis meets old hc like His Hero Is Gone or Union of Uranus. There are tons of bands playing a similar style today, but for us Planks are one of the very very very few that matter.) 10.00
POCAHAUNTED Mirror Mics LP (weird forest - The hardest working ladies in show business are back! Pocahaunted offer up two side long siren excursions into the otherworldy plains. On "One Another" our enchanted twosome ride a cindering tapestry of guitar string propelled by other-worldly beats of oblivion. And "Sister Calypso".. a hauting ode to the lovestruck daughter of Atlas or uncanny caribbean sea breeze lullabye that transmogrifies into full blown tropical thunder? Who can say? This dynamic duo is on a roll! Likes: Billy Joel, cuss words, candy corn, diamonds and furs, psychic connections, african percussion, and kombucha. Dislikes: flat tires, the ocean, and silent movies. Extra skronk and skree provided by Andy Spore and Bobb Bruno. Label art by B&A. Beautiful full color covers with artwork by Olga Balema.) 15.00
SHIFT creation & space LP (at war with - At last! It looked like it was never gonna happen but it has, and I'm immensely proud of At War's first LP release! This is the second album by SHIFT (first on vinyl), and builds on his much-applauded debut, "Unable To Abide The Silence Of The World". Inhabiting a dark world between noise, dark post industrial and power electronics, it's futile to try and pin down Shift - this record is just utter bleak, heavy-as-fuck, fist-in-your-face concentrated POWER. Four varied tracks ranging from sub-bass grinding drone to moments of near-silent lull, to all-out viscreal static jihad, this is one of the most accomplished and expertly composed and executed albums of the genre I've heard in years. Features Lee Stokoe on bass (Skullflower, Culver, Marzuraan). Essential listening and made for vinyl!
300 copies. Heavy 180g vinyl in a sheer black disco bag, cased in a beautiful silk-screened folder and heavy-duty PVC sleeve, with a high-grade card insert/lyric sheet. Artwork by Pete White.) 14.00
SOLID PONY Collar to Cuff LP (bakery outlet - Members of Twelve Hour Turn and The South create jangly, "organic" rock reminiscent of early Built to Spill, Weakerthans, and Lemonheads. For fans of good hair, vegetables, and the ocean." - Ryan Murphy (True North/Palatka/No Idea Employee)) 12.50
SUPERMACHINER "rise of the great machine" 2xLP (e-vinyl - Supermachiner was intended as a side project of the Boston hardcore band Converge, which includes singer/songwriter Jacob Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou. Finally here's "Rise of the Great Machine" released for the first time ever on vinyl, the record was originally released by a now defunct label called Undecided Records in 2001. 19 tracks of post rock, experimental metal mixed with ambient tunes and unsane samples. The cover artwork was totally re-done by Jacob Bannon himself and the record comes in a lovely gatefold 2xLP with limited color editions) 16.00
THE SPOILS To The Victor... LP (deep six - The vocalist and drummer of Boston's legendary Siege have returned to punk rock with The Spoils, who play politically charged punk rock without the overproduction of so many modern bands. Even 20 years after Siege, they have retained their speed, intensity and anger while throwing in some rock 'n' roll influences.) 11.50
THEY AND THE CHILDREN home LP (kill normal - They And The Children present their first release for Kill Normal Records, an eight-track effort that sees the band returning to their From Ashes Rise and early-Isis inspired DIY hardcore. Now available on colored vinyl.) 12.50
TO BE EATEN in the clearing LP (colored vinyl) (ash from sewat - After a years hiatus, TO BE EATEN return with their second full length! Awesome shreddin' metal that runs the gamut between punk/hc, death metal and grind. The band pulled out all the stops this time, with an offering that is heavier, faster and more technical than their debut. Tight, fast, technical, creative. HEAVY. Great packaging, with awesome design, and 2-color vinyl.) 10.50
TOTAL LIFE same 12" (animal disguise - WALLS OF SOUND CONTAINING LAYERS OF TONE AND SHIFTING HARMONICS WASH OVER YOU LIKE A THUNDERSTORM IN THIS DEBUT RECORDING BY GROWING'S KEVIN DORIA. THIS IS A VINYL-ONLY REISSUE OF THE SOLD-OUT ADR CASSETTE FROM 2005.) 12.00
TRASH TALK same LP (reflections – euro press - Picking up where "Plagues" left off, Trash Talk's debut LP delves deeper into the abyss surrounding their last chaotic release. Recorded in just under two days at Chicago's Electrical Audio and employing the genius of Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies, Neurosis), Trash Talk has continued to push the envelope of extreme music. Grinding guitars paired with heavy yet somber bass lines provide the battlefield for harsh dueling vocals to wage war over twelve instant classics.) 12.50
TRASH TALK same LP (US PRESS) (self released by the band – get it while you can!!!) 13.00
WARCRY Not So Distant Future LP (feral ward - On their third full-length, Warcry doesn't deviate from their formula of bulldozer-heavy, Discharge-influenced, D-beat hardcore, featuring members of his Hero Is Gone, Tragedy, Hellshock, Severed Head Of State, and Talk Is Poison. Now available on vinyl.) 12.50
THE WEAKERTHANS Reconstruction Site LP (epitah - Sonically located in the finest tradition of punk, The Weakerthans walk an archipelago of influences from rock to folk to alt-country and beyond, led by lyrics tutored in the best of contemporary literature and progressive politics. Their third full-length recording, "Reconstruction Site," mixed by Adam Kasper (Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age) and produced by the legendary Ian Blurton, is their most musically cohesive and lyrically ambitious effort to date. "Reconstruction Site" follows the success of "Left And Leaving" and "Fallow" - records that garnered appreciation and acclaim from listeners around the world. Now available on vinyl.) 12.50
WHITE HINTERLAND phylactery factory LP (dead oceans - Whereas 2006's Wind-Up Canary was short stories, little Salinger vignettes, Phylactery Factory is filled with dreams, memories, warnings. Dienel's voice is more hidden, crouching amid swish, drone and the wildflower jazz of her friends - and this second LP is released under a new moniker. It's an album full of reminders. Reminders of the likes of Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, John Cage, Alice Coltrane, M. Ward. Reminders of winter. But mostly reminders to oneself. This is what a phylactery is: the tefillin worn by devout Jews upon head and arm; a prayer in a box and then knotted into place; the reminder of a one and only.) 14.50
CD
CALDERA mist through your Consciousness CD (radar swarm - Caldera had been around for a bit of time now, roaming around the Nancy musical scene, whetting their finest tunes and getting ready for the final attack. The time has come now, a time to unleash a roaring fury that has been kept tamed for too long. The band has signed their first album and recorded it with the talented Serge Morratel at the Rec Studio in Geneva, Switzerland, obviously a long time commitment for Atropine and Radar Swarm always marked with success (through Year of no light, Tantrum, Metronome Charisma among others). Caldera's sound can be pictured as the infernal encounter between the most epic side of a now ageing heavy metal recently revamped by the arcane Impure Wilhelmina and the hazy atmospheres developed by combos such as the post-metalheads Capricorns, not to mention the common love for a tight as Hell riffage they share with the latter's brother in arms, Taint. Rather than going straight to the point, Caldera deliberately uses sideways, takes you through the filthiest detours but stay assured you'll get your load of insane headbanging listening to these tracks. That's what it's all about.) 10.00
CHILD BRIDGE reflections on prism city CD-R (blackest rainbow - OK, so I don't support any kids getting married to old dudes, its not cool... but then this is a new recording by THE Child Bride! Spooked vocals, weird clunks, cut up surreal vibes, this one is a real slayer, almost like some kinda fucked up singer songwriter noise styles. The killer gem here has gotta be 'Rabbit Moon', some far out repetitive churns, some how blurring supremely with some thudding rumbling, and then some killer trance drugged vocal, that'll hypnotize your mind man! Limited to 60 copies with pasted art on envelopes.) 7.00
EYEBALLS - Sea Of John Henry Smyth CDR (blackest rainbow - Another release from our Newcastle brothers, Eyeballs is Richard Dawson, and 'The Sea of William Henry Smyth' is a real nice minimal ambient-ish drone piece, multi-layered, and multi-textural, if you're into Gareth Hardwick, and Kranky Records you'll be into this for sure! Limited to 70 copies in lilac parchment paper.) 7.00
FISTULA burdened by your existence CD (plague island - Brand new studio album of the nocturnal sludgemasters from hell. The best band in the genre today.) 9.50
MIRAH the old days feeling CD (modern radio - This CD is a collection of out-of-print, reissued or previously unreleased material. Tracks originated from a variety of cassette, 7" or foreign compilations, including the out-of-print "Small Sale" 7", released on Modern Radio in 2001.) 13.50

BRAINWORMS “Singles Collection” Cassette (peoples republic of rock & roll - Welcome to PRcubed vol.4…..This is a BEAST. Somehow I wouldn’t call it fierce, and yet still worlds apart from tame…..It is perfectly executed. Brainworms are the tightest musical bros on the planet right now. While listening to this tape I realized, ”SHIT…this is the band that is going down in history…..and we’re all lucky enough to be around while they are writing it.” Anyway, we’re stoked about this if you can’t tell. This release is titled “TAPE” and it is sort of a singles collection; an excellent way to listen to all of those glorious 7_ splits if yer lazy and don’t want to change the records or if yer lazy and in yer car.) 5.00
CALDERA LAKES same Tape (blackest rainbow - Slick new project featuring Eva of Kevin Sheilds and Brittany of Married In Berdichev!... swamp and hive noise laced with lulling vocal drones.. bleeding to full obliteration. Almost two insane opposites making one very cool new vibe.) 7.00

SPOILS AND RELICS WITH JOHNNY SCARR - 'Pack Horse Overview' Tape (blackest rainbow - New release from these Nottingham based dudes, Scarr is an occasional member of Fossils, and has also collaborated with Luke Younger of Birds of Delay/Helm. Sleeve by Patrick Milsom, hand numbered edition of 60.) 7.00

WINDOWS "meet at the bridge" Tape (ash from sweat - Five songs assembled from years of 4-track experimenting. It’s noisy, but it’s not. It’s got melodies, but it doesn’t. It’s heavy and blissful at the same time. Never judge a book by its cover. Parents will swear it promotes anti-social behavior. Comes in a 7" layout.) 5.00
