Boy Omega: The Grey Rainbow CD EP Riptide;
Bevor uns Boy Richtung City Slang verlässt, gibt es kurz nach seinem sensationellen “Black tango” sieben neue Songs für uns auf dieser EP. “I tried to dig a tunnel from us to eternity ...”. Unsterblichkeit suchen, aber sich schon im nächsten Lied bewusst sein, dass es morgen schon zu spät sein könnte (»Control«). Müssen ja nicht immer Lovesongs sein, mit denen Martin Gustaffson die Herzen erobert. Nicht mal Lyrics brauchte diese himmlische Musik. Der schwedische Songwriter macht die wohl zurzeit irrlichtendste Popmusik. Von einem eher durchschnittlichen Grundmotiv ausgehend, dringt die schmal gehaltenene Begleitcombo des Mulitinstrumentalisten in lichte Höhen vor, dank seines dramatisch anschwellenden Gesangs, dank Karin Wibergs begnadetem Geigenspiel. Auf Boy Omegas »The Black Tango«-Nachfolge-EP stimmt alles: zauberhafte Melodien, emotionale Vocals und die atemberaubenden Stringarrangements, Glockenspiel, Electronics, Piano etc. ergeben einen der strahlendensten Tonträger dieses Herbstes. Bratze: Kraft LP Riptide;
Ein Duo namens Bratze? Die Platte heißt 'Kraft'? Was das denn? Klingt wie 'Das Krokodil und sein Nilpferd', 'Zwei Himmelhunde auf dem Weg zur Hölle', 'Zwei bärenstarke Typen'. So Kram halt. Und stimmt auch. Bratze sind CLICK CLICK DECKER und DER TANTE RENATE aus Hamburg. Ihr gemeinsames Projekt sowie Album trägt nicht zufällig strotzende Bezeichnungen wie Bratze oder 'Kraft'. Genau um so was geht es auch, die Songs tragen Titel von vermeintlich cheesy Actionhelden wie 'Dudikoff', 'Jean Claude' oder 'Lundgren'. Trotz der Konzeptidee laufen die beiden aber nicht Gefahr, dass die Banalität eines roten Fadens jeden Gedanken determinieren würde. Im Gegenteil, oft sind die Verweise tricky (der Song 'Hightowers Herz' dürfte sich auf den Figurennamen des wortkargen Riesen-Cops aus 'Police Academy' beziehen) oder gänzlich rätselhaft, und es bleibt nur das Grundgefühl von Dynamik und Einsatz als Anknüpfungspunkt an das big picture 'Kraft'. "Das Konzept ist eher Spielerei. Stärke wird immer verpönt, sogar verachtet, ... aber im Stillen freut man sich, wenn man der Sieger beim Armdrücken ist. In letzter Zeit gab es zu viel Hippiemusik, die auf Peace und Harmonie getrimmt ist. Warum muss Spielerei immer gleich niedlich sein, ... warum nicht hässlich und kräftig? Von dem einen gibt es zu wenig und von dem anderen zu viel." Das sagt Kevin a.k.a. ClickClickDecker. Und damit dürfte klar sein, dass es sich hier um eine Milieu-Platte handelt. Also die zurechnungsfähige Minderheit, die Rest-Indie-Posse aus den Internet-Foren, den kleinen Konzertsälen und Bachelor-Schmieden allerorts wird adressiert. Dass der Großteil der Welt Stärke sehr wohl aufs Viehischste abkultet - geschenkt! Der Großteil der Welt braucht keine Ansprache in Pop, der braucht eine geschlossene Tür vor der Fresse. Und dahinter spielt sich diese wahnsinnig geile Ko-Produktion ab. Musikalisch haben beide tatsächlich ihre Enden des Pferdes wie an Karneval zusammengeschraubt. Nur dass keiner der Arsch ist, es aber trotzdem vorwärts geht. Schwitzig entfremdeter DAF-Minimalismus kombiniert mit brachialen Momenten und griffig kruden Un-Slogans, die trotzdem diese ClickClick'sche Unmittelbarkeit der Ansprache besitzen. Das ist so aufregend. Das ist so mitreißend. Das ist streng genommen die PLATTE DES JAHRES. (INTRO);12.50€

Corrupted: Paso Inferior LP;THE PASO INFERIOR LP
is about 30 minutes the CD was 41 minutes.Corrupted re-recorded and remixed this new record in 2002. Side one is like the theme from the cd just it's like about 15 minutes short...and in my opinion it sound much better than the orginal from 1997. The B side....which still reads as 1 track of the LP but feels more like a second track is about 16 minutes and is more heavy spheric... without vocals ...and there is anything like that on the CD fom 1997. Japanese underground icons Corrupted create droning, sludgy, painfully slow death/doom metal and ambient music along the same lines -- or should that be trenches? -- as bands like Earth, Boris, and Sunn O))). Formed in Osaka, Japan, circa 1994, the reclusive group is comprised of vocalist Hevi, guitarist Talbot, keyboardist Takehito, bassist Jose, and drummer Chew, and has issued an inordinate number of singles, EPs, split discs, and full-length albums over the years (including 1997's Paso Inferior, 1999's Llenando de Gusanos, and 2004's Se Hace por los Suenos Asesinos) -- but always under their own idiosyncratic terms. These include holding anything remotely resembling rock stardom in utter contempt, mysteriously writing all of their lyrics in Spanish, and refusing to even take promo shots, so that the only known images of the group are those snapped by fans at their concerts. Free Kitten: Inherit CD Ecstatic Peace;
A decade and one year ago, Free Kitten released their third album, Sentimental Education. On it, one heard Kim Gordon's vocals and guitar. One also heard Pussy Galore's Julie Cafritz's vocals and guitar. Drums were played by the Boredom's Yoshimi; bass: Mark Ibold, formerly of Pavement. There were guest stars, too, but for the post-punk, indie, noise uninitiated, the draw of this album,--and 1994's "UnBoxed," and "Nice Ass" after it--was less its pedigree than the music's ability to challenge or even stop the movie lies that generally play in all our heads, such as: I am happy. Cut to: my family is whole and happy. Fade to black. Free Kitten's music suggested otherwise. Free Kitten liked fading to black--and, in the process, drawing a curtain over the status quo. Free Kitten told stories about the family dog as well, less in their lyrics than in their sound, which brought Mom to mind, too, but Mom wielding a knife near the neck of the family dog that refuses to run away--or shut up. But that was then. As to now: Free Kitten is releasing its fourth studio album. Titled "Inherit," it reacquaints us with Gordon, Cafritz and Yoshimi. On the disc, then and now are collapsed into the present. And it is our present that is most effected by songs like "Erected Girl," which reminds one of bossa nova rhythms run through a Kosher meat grinder. And then there's "Free Kitten on the Mountain," which amounts to a travelogue of sorts--but through a Lord Buckley-like subconscious mind. Gregor Samsa: 27:36 + 2 dot LP Riptide;
A young band from Richmond, Virginia, blends the dynamic range of Godspeed You Black Emperor, the melodic subtleties of Slowdive, Low and the Cocteau Twins, and the swirling guitar maelstrom of My Bloody Valentine into a fusion of hushed atmospherics and disorienting noisescapes. During their hypnotic live performances, songs stretch into one another, projected images mesh with sound, and volume shifts from a whisper to a roar. The chaotic nature of their live show is channeled into a lush, multi-layered recording, focusing upon subtle male-female vocal layering, booming drums, and the interplay of acoustic and electric piano, organ, and synthesized instrumentation. The songs are a mix of the thrashing aggression & mega-riffage of the previous album: The Ultimate Destroyer and the unrelenting beatings & Sabbath chugs of Carnage, mixed with a new emotionless ferocity reserved for an executioner. Vocals are mercilessly hateful and compellingly ugly, bordering on the death roars of Obituary’s John Tardy and the gluttoral rolls of Abbatt of Immortal… this surely is the sound of a very savage war. Mudhoney: The Lucky Ones LP Subpop;
Worldwide lovers of the finer things are rejoicing at the news that Mudhoney, yep Mudhoney, is back in action in 2008 with The Lucky Ones, the band’s eighth full album in a mere 20 years of triumphant rocking. Deliberately and aggressively raw, The Lucky Ones sounds as lean and as full-on as any modern equivalent one cares to mention. Recorded in a scant 3.5 days (including overdubs) with Tucker Martine (who also recorded four songs on the previous album, Under a Billion Suns), Mudhoney went in armed with a batch of new material expecting to spend a fair amount of time getting it right. Bang—and bang again after some mixing—and a new album was birthed in record time, faster than anything else the band’s done to date. The grand majority of these numbers were intentionally written “from the rhythm up” instead of from the riff and the lyrics down. The effect is to thrust out the bottom-end rumble of drummer Dan Peters and bassist Guy Maddison, and to bring about a cohesive whole not entirely ruled by the almighty riff—although you certainly don’t have to look hard to find ‘em. Oxbow: Narcotic Story Lp Black Diamond;"After blotting out the sun with 2006's CD+DVD compilation, Love That's Last: A Wholly Hypnographic And Disturbing Work Regarding Oxbow, our boys besmeared the Record Plant in San Francisco with Grammy-winning producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Raconteurs, Frank Zappa, American Music Club) in tow and emerged with The Narcotic Story, possibly the finest fucking album of Oxbow's 10,000-year career. In fact, we're gonna go with the word masterpiece here. Presumably, the Story in question follows vocalist Eugene Robinson's alter ego Frank in his terrific and triumphant struggle against non-drug use - but the way Robinson writes lyrics, one just never knows. In all likelihood, the joke's on us (and it's a painful and disturbing one) even though we're pretty sure Eugene prefers not to joke about these things. And neither does the band, for that matter: On The Narcotic Story, Dan Adams (bass), Greg Davis (drums) and Niko Wenner (guitar/organ) unfurl the quiet and creepy and desperate and successfully deconstructed in a kind of ominous/strident/triumphant rock (yeah, we said it) that expresses, in no uncertain terms, the fact that Oxbow do not fuck around. Eugene describes it as "a disturbing stroll through a place where everything's broken," but to us, it's more like a terrifying sprint from the very real prospect of severe bodily harm inflicted by some omniscient & immutable force. We're still not sure why Eugene insists on removing his pants on stage, or why approximately 15% of Oxbow shows end in fistfights, but we're kinda like you in that respect: We've got a lot to learn.";16.00€

Russian Circles: Station CD Suicide Squeeze;
Metal trimmings, minimal jazz primers, and cryptic riffs that hit out of nowhere with the pummeling impact of a comet. Their music weaves up an intense and cinematic albeit soothing clobbering that cannot be pigeonholed. Their lumbering layers of chiseled post rock and feathery psychedelic infusions have both revved and enticed listeners into mental orgasms the world over. They've shared stages with Tool, Dalek, Daughters, and Pelican.;15.00€

Set Your Goals: Mutiny! LP Eulogy;
Following in the footsteps of Lifetime, Gorilla Biscuits, and Saves The Day, Set Your Goals espouse a brand of positive hardcore punk that has sadly been absent in the music scene in recent years. The band has already gained respect from both critics and ardent fans in their relatively brief career starting in early 2004. Switchblade: S/T LP Riptide;
This is their fourth record and their style changed again more. The LP has two very long tracks. The first one starts typically Switchblade. Slow, dark , drone-ish with crashing cymbals. But the atmosphere is different compared to the previous record. It sounds more dark, depressing, negative - it reminds me alot of Khanate. Guestvocals by "E" of WATAIN and Mattias Friberg of LOGH. I think if Switchblade and Khanate would have a child, it would be this record........haha! Beautiful and slightly different artwork compared to the CD version. From Göttingen, Germany were founded in 1999. They released their demo-cassette “Tourette, baby” in 2000, followed by their debut 7” “Donations welcome” on Mount Moustache and a split 7” with ZANN from Leipzig/ Germany on Modus Operandi/ Adagio830. In late 2003 The 244GL unleashed their debut full-length on Riptide/ Scorched Earth Policy entitled “Club of the sons”. At the moment the band is rehearsing new songs for the next record and playing shows anywhere they can.;9.00€

The Book of daniel: Dongs for the locust king CD Riptide;
Daniel Ingemar Gustafsson kam am 19. Mai 1976 genau während der Eishockey Playoffs zur Welt. Das war in Nässjö, Schweden. Und wem es hier schon auffällt: Ja, Daniel ist der große Bruder von Martin Gustafsson aka BOY OMEGA. Ob es was mit den Umständen seiner Geburt zu tun hatte weiß niemand, aber Daniel war ein großer Eishockey Fan und widmete seine gesamte Zeit dem Sport. Als Torhüter. Einige Jahre und etliche blaue Flecken später spielte ihm ein Freund Berge von Schallplatten vor. Da wusste Daniel, dass seine Bestimmung von nun an das Musizieren werden sollte. Überwiegend im Homerecording Stil nahm er Laufe der Jahre zahllose Songs auf. Zu seinem Ensemble gehörten u.a. BOY OMEGA, BJÖRN KLEINHENZ und MATHIAS JOHANSSON, der nun als Gitarrist bei TIGER LOU für Furore sorgt. Sie alle starteten also erfolgreiche Solo Karrieren, so das Daniel mit neuem Orchester nach Jahren entschied, nun endlich sein Debütalbum aufzunehmen und zu veröffentlichen: Dieses heißt „Songs for the Locust King“ und erscheint am 10.11. via Riptide Recordings/ Cargo. Daniel Gustafsson legt dabei ein Debütalbum vor, das seines gleichen sucht. Denn seine Songwriting-Hausaufgaben hat er über Jahre fleißig gemacht und so klingen seine opulenten Kompositionen dann auch. Torpedo:/las Puertas: Split LP Riptide;
Tiger Lou + Firefox = LAS PUERTAS! This is a perfect match and the result is an amazing record. Great, simple songs, extremly poppy strumming songs. Barely a song lasts more than two minutes. "Water" is such a hymn, could be a big chart success, thats right! Torpedo is the sparkling alliance of four confused kids all living in the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The members, also found in acts like Tiger Lou, the Je Ne Sais Qoui, Starmarket, the Crystal Committee etc, got together during the rainy summer of 2004 and gave birth to this unstoppable spectacle. Before there even was a band the two guitarists, Pontus and Andreas, went and recorded three songs in early July 2004 at their friend, Love Martinsens, studio. The result turned out even better than expected and they knew they had to move up to the next level. But there was still a few important pieces missing in the puzzle, a bass player and a drummer. Erik Welén, old friend and band mate with Pontus in Tiger Lou, was the given man for the job as bass player. Finding the funky drummer was going to be a bigger task, but after a few weeks with the searchlights Jimmy Ottosson from the excellent "the Je Ne Sais Qoui" came from nowhere and filled the hole with his greatness. Windsor for the Derby: How we Lost Lp Secretly Canadian;
Windsor For The Derby spent the last year and a half writing and recording the "How We Lost" record. Holed up for days on end in their Philadelphia studio, they recorded and re-recorded obsessively until every sound was exactly where they wanted it. Gear broke, hard drives crashed, gear broke again, and nervous breakdowns ensued. It seemed at times that this record would never be completed but the band persevered just as they have managed to do for the past dozen or so years, as the music industry fluxed around it. Despite the connotation of its title, "How We Lost" is a celebratory album. It's a reflective record and, in its own way, celebrates the WFTD continuum that's been created from their first release (Calm Hades Float, 1996) to their last (Giving Up the Ghost, 2005). Each of these recordings is a sequel to the next both in narrative and musically and as the band's first two records (Calm Hades Float and Minnie Greutzfeldt) were re-released last year they found themselves in constant dialogue about their body of work and the paths they'd chosen. Also a part of that ongoing dialogue were the records that the band finds itself consistently re-visiting (Swell Maps, Section 25, Psychic TV and much of the Factory Records catalog) and what makes those recordings timeless and resonate in a personal way with the band. Dabei scheint die begabte Schriftstel lerin und Tochter aus reichem Schweizer Elternhaus vom Glück eigentlich begünstigt: gebildet, von außergewöhnlicher androgyner Schönheit und Melancholie sie verdreht Männern und Frauen gleichermaßen den Kopf und mit einer großen Leidenschaft für alles Fremde führt sie ein unangepasstes Leben. Mit ihrem Auto fährt sie von der Schweiz nach Afghanistan, Indien, Irak und Iran, wo sie auch einige Zeit lebt; sie arbeitet in Belgisch-Kongo und den USA. Cassidy, Kyle: Bewaffnetes Amerika;
Der bekannte Fotograf Kyle Cassidy stellte sich die Frage, warum so viele Amerikaner Schusswaffen besitzen. Ihm wurde klar, dass er, um eine Antwort zu bekommen, die Menschen in ihrer Umgebung fotografieren musste. Für seine Recherche bereiste er mit dem Auto zwei Jahre den nordamerikanischen Kontinent, legte dabei 15.000 Meilen zurück und traf auf die unterschiedlichsten Waffenbesitzer, die ihn in ihre Häuser einluden und ihm auf die Frage nach dem Warum die unterschiedlichsten Antworten gaben. Entstanden ist dabei ein beeindruckender Bildband mit imposanten und aussagekräftigen Bildern. Längst nicht jeder Waffenbesitzer entspricht dem Stereotyp des rechtskonservativen Waffennarren, doch bei manch einem Bild überkommt den Betrachter dennoch ein ungutes Gefühl. Frank, Robert: Die Amerikaner
;Robert Franks Bildband The Americans erschien 1958 in Frankreich, ein Jahr später in den USA. 83 Schwarzweißfotografien zeigen Menschen und Szenen aus Amerika, die Frank in den Jahren 1955/56 im Rahmen eines Stipendiums der John Simon Guggenheim Foundation während einer Reise durch die 48 Bundesstaaten abgelichtet hatte. Eine Aufnahme zeigt einen Mann in einer Bar in Las Vegas vor einer Jukebox stehen. Eine andere den Blick aus einem Hotelfenster in Butte, Montana. Eine weitere ein Autokino in Detroit. Franks Fotos sind unmittelbar, offen und unabgeschlossen. Sie vermitteln immer auch etwas Gewöhnliches, was den Mythos vom Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten entschleiert und beim Erscheinen des Buches in Amerika heftige Reaktionen auslöste. Dennoch oder gerade deswegen wurde The Americans stilbildend und inspirierte eine ganze Generation vor allem amerikanischer Fotografen. 172 S. Gebunden;30.00€

Frank, Robert: Paris;
Viele der von Robert Frank während seiner Paris-Aufenthalte aufgenommenen Bilder sind heute weltbekannt und gehören zum festen Repertoire der Fotografiegeschichte. Die 80 von Robert Frank und der Kuratorin Ute Eskildsen ausgewählten Werke machen deutlich, dass Franks Erfahrung in der "Neuen Welt" - der gebürtige Schweizer war 1947 nach New York emigriert - seinen Blick für die urbanen Strukturen Europas geschärft hat. Der Besuch der französischen Metropole im Jahr 1951 war Franks zweite Rückkehr nach Europa. Der Fotograf erlebte die Straßen von Paris als Bühne menschlicher Aktivität. Mit seiner Kamera beobachtete er die vielen kleinen Momente im großstädtischen Alltag: Spaziergänger, Straßenarbeiter und Händler, beiläufige Ereignisse, Begegnungen und Geschichten in den Cafés, auf den Boulevards und Plätzen waren seine Themen. Frank konzentrierte sich insbesondere auf die Blumenverkäufer, die sein Paris-Bild nachhaltig prägten - und in seinem 1987 erschienenen Buch Flower is Paris, Ford is Detroit, Mabou is Waiting (1987) noch einmal aufscheinen. Schleimkeim war eine der einflussreichsten Bands der ehemaligen DDR – und dies weit über Punk-Kreise hinaus. Die Biographie ihres Saengers Dieter "Otze" Ehrlich liest sich abenteuerlicher als jeder Roman. Sie spiegelt die ganze innere Zerrissenheit eines unangepassten Charakters in einem autoritaeren Staat wider. 1980 gruendete Otze zusammen mit seinem Bruder Klaus in Erfurt die Punkband Schleimkeim. Es kam zu wenigen, aber legendären Auftritten, begleitet von Skandalen und Gefaengnisaufenthalten. Nachdem Otze 1998 seinen Vater mit einer Axt erschlagen hatte, wurde er in eine psychiatrische Klinik eingewiesen, wo er 2005 unter ungeklaerten Umstaenden ums Leben kam. Als ueberaus begabter Musiker brachte Otze sich alle Instrumente selbst bei und konstruierte ein Aufnahmegeraet, das sogar gut genug war für Plattenaufnahmen. Zugleich besaß er aber auch einen gewalttaetigen, launischen Charakter, experimentierte mit Drogen, hatte Kontakte zur Stasi – anscheinend im Glauben, sowieso nichts Relevantes zu verraten – und war nach eigenen Aussagen mit Tod und Teufel im Bunde. Frank Willmann und Anne Hahn, Herausgeber des viel beachteten Hooligan-Buchs "Stadionpartisanen", haben Dutzende von Zeitzeugen interviewt, Bandmitglieder, Freunde, Musikerkollegen, Pfarrer, Sozialarbeiter. Sie zeichnen ein vielschichtiges und ungeschoentes Bild dieses außergewoehnlichen Musikers und Menschen und liefern somit auch ein Stueck DDR-Geschichte von innen. Tobias, Herbert: Blicke und Begehren;
Herbert Tobias war das Enfant terrible der deutschen Fotografenszene in den späten fünfziger Jahren, ein rebellischer Star, dessen Name heute nur noch wenigen geläufig ist. Aber man kennt seine Bilder: der junge Kinski, die Knef, Andreas Baader, Nico, verführerische Modefotos und erotische Männerfotografien. Bilder, die Tobias in Fach- und Kennerkreisen schon früh zur Legende werden ließen. Tobias kam als Autodidakt zur Fotografie. Schon als junger Soldat an der russischen Ostfront gelangen ihm Bilder, die in ihrer metaphorischen Dichte und Symbolhaltigkeit weit über Amateurfotos aus dem Soldatenleben hinaus gehen. Seine eigentliche Laufbahn als Fotograf indes begann in Paris, wo Tobias von 1951 bis 1953 mit seinem Freund Dick lebte.
