-ACID KING “III” lp –kreation records- 15,00
As excruciatingly heavy as Acid King have been their whole careers, they have always had a sophisticated sheen to their music, a soulful musicality that has made them far more listenable and approachable than many of their more uncompromisingly tuneless brethren. Their sound is oppressive, sure, but more subtly so than say, latter day Sleep. Instead, there is a wandering, superbly melodic fuzzy dimension that shares more with the spacey explorations of Sons of Otis and the angular tentativeness of Kyuss than the cruelty of a Warhorse. “III” might really be the most welcoming Acid King work to date, “Wheel Nation” exhibiting an irresistible, headcrushing, ominous groove that recalls Electric Wizard’s less blaring moments. An insanely distorted bassline guides this track, while Lori’s ethereal croons catapult the listener to stoned-out NIRVANA, I dare say that this is one of the finest tunes Acid King have penned to date- everything just FLOWS, the groove is so damn fat it never outstays its welcome, the guitar and bass tone are absolutely PERFECT, and the lead that surfaces in the bridge is just overwhelmingly elegant and tasteful
-CAT POWER “dear sir” lp 16,50
1996 debut album from Chan Marshall features Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley on drums. Her distinctive blend of blues, country, folk and punk creates songs like the dark, noisy “Itchyhead,” which mixes tension and hope, topping it with Marshall‘s earnest, expressive vocals

-CHURCH OF MISERY / DEER CREEK split lp –game two records- 14,00

-ENGINE DOWN “a sign of breath” 7” 4,00
A teaser 7" of new Engine Down material. For as much as I joan on this band, they really are pretty awesome and these new songs are probably their best yet. This 7" has a song from their new Lovitt full-length, two new jams, and an experimental remix of "Two Tone" from their last album.
-FRAIL “new harmony” 7” -bloodlink records- 5,00
Legendary mid 90s sxe screamo band
-FREEZE, THE “I hate tourists” 7” -schizophrenic records- 5,00
Schizophrenic Records has graced the masses with the re-issue of the classic 1980 single "I Hate Tourists". The A-side is played in a much more new wave style than their later, more hardcore tunes, while the B-side "Don't Forget Me Tommy" is more of a Ramones-influenced number
-GET RAD “say fuck no to rules, man” lp –hyperrealist- 12,00
With members of Since By Man, Seven Days Of Samsara, High On Crime and Kung Fu Rick, these Milwaukee boys have shed the influences of their other projects and recorded an album of 21 songs of '80s inspired hardcore. The lyrics tackle such issues as BMX riding, friendship, water parks, and puppies, with the music being akin to that of Minor Threat and Strike Anywhere with the screamed vocals of 9 Shocks Terror.
-GET RAD “s/t” 7” 5,00

-IRON LUNG / AGENTS OF ABHORRENCE split 7” -missinglink records- 5,00
-ISIS “in the absence of truth” 2xLP –robotic empire records, US PRESS 22,00
Isis are a band who requires no introduction. Formed in 1997 Isis have established themselves as one of, if not the best act within their genre. Although Isis are notably known as a Prog/Sludge Metal band they defy all genres with their hypnotising music. I've been waiting in anticipation for the release of Isis's forth full-length album, "In The Absence Of Truth" ever since i heard the masterful "Panopticon" and when i heard it had leaked, i just had to check it out. Isis are a band who are forever going through transitional stages. They've evolved in every way possible since the early days of "Mosquito Control" and "The Red Sea", even from their debut album "Celestial" back in the year 2000. For me, the major differences come in terms of musical progression and the production of Isis' music. In the days of "Celestial" Isis' production was hazy and worthy of their reputation as a Sludge Metal band, but with "The Absence Of Truth" Isis have developed a far cleaner sound in which every instrument is easily distinguishable and the vocals can actually be made out. Another major difference that struck me instantly with this new approach from Isis is the vocals. Long gone are the days where Aaron Turner screams his way through song after song, but now there is a bit more variation in vocals which we started to see on "Panopticon". His clean vocals are introduced more often than not now, and they're immense. They grab your attention and are able to hold it for long periods of time, he is a superb vocalist. He can alternate between styles of vocals easily and pulls off such beauty with his clean vocals which compliment the music fantastically. Seemingly Isis have resorted to a more tribal feel, something like that of Tool. It's a welcomed addition personally. Synths are more prominent and more easily distinguished in the music. The texture of the music is also something that has been vastly improved. Isis spin out some very beautiful melodies and harmonious vocals. Comparisons are likely to be made between Isis and a number of bands including, Tool, Pelican and Jesu. But Isis are in a league of their own. This album is simply stunning, it contains everything you'd want and everything that makes music great. Incredible melodies, fantastic structures and a bit of variation from the norm. Highlights include; Wrists of Kings, Not In Rivers, But In Drops and Garden of Light
-LA PIOVRA “s/t” 12” –youth attack records- 13,00
With a beautiful colored vinyl one-sided silk-screened 12" EP, Italy's La Piovra introduce themselves to the world with their debut recording for Youth Attack. This record is six songs of lightning fast rock-n-roll hardcore that can best be described as a mix of Jellyroll Rockheads with Brutal Knights and the vocal delivery of Los Crudos.
-LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR “the ultimate destroyer” lp –southern lord records 16,00
A epic and undeniable monolith hath been unleashed upon thee earth... Behold! The second album from Chicagos' Lair of the Minotaur. The Ulitmate Destroyer bulldozes down the same path as their critically acclaimed and now classic debut: Carnage. Blistering riffs, and skull-crushing rhythms played with a apocalyptic aesthetic and complimented perfectly with horrific lyrical vengeance. Ultimate Destroyer in whole is faster, yet slower and more vicious then anything the band has previously done. From the maniacal speed of: "Lord of Butchery to the Death Metal obsessed groove of "Behead the Gorgon" to the mammoth doom of album closer: The Hydra Coils Upon This Wicker Mountain" this album smothers alot of purely METAL, hallowed ground.
-LOINEN “s/t” lp –blind date records- 9,00
These five parasites from Karis present 6 songs of slow and crunching Sludgecore in 52 minutes. The music reflects both, the lugubrious swamps and the forested majestic broad lakes of Finland. Monotonous but spectacular. They add to their unique blend of Slugde influences of pitchblack Doom and a lacing of Hardcore
-LUDICRA “fex ubris lex orbis” lp –alternative tentacles records- 12,00
Arguably the best US black metal band that noone has heard (with the exception of Wolves in the Throne Room), San Francisco’s Ludicra, comprised of Hammers of Misfortune’s John Cobbett, Impaled’s Ross Sewage and two rather vehement female vocalists Laurie Sue Shanaman and Christy Cather, return with their off the wall sludgy and epic form of black metal
-MARE „s/t“ lp –hydra-head records / transaltion loss records- 13,50
Not fucking bad. This Canadian act has a lot going on. Their vocalist used to be in The End, but this is infinitely more creative and forceful than said group (no offense, just a fact). The first track alone rolls through some sleek clean guitars, plodding sludge rhythms, thickly dissonant melodic chords, a few caustic textures, unusual picking patterns and time signatures, and an amazing vocal performance that shifts without flaw from ultra strained (in a good way) screams with an absolutely sick texture to emphatic singing. "They Sent You" then follows by lulling into some unexpected orchestration with crooned singing that falls right in as though it were another instrument... a minute later picking up into a rolling rhythm with plodding bass and some amazing fucking percussive work including some additional drumming that has a tribal sort of bent to it. The bulk of the piece is instrumental, with lots of unusual chord phrasings and discordant arrangements. The brief "Tropics" follows similarly to the opening of "They Sent You", but takes a jazzier direction musically and allows the singing to be a bit more direct. At certain points it's hard not to catch some sort of loose Mike Patton-isms going on, but... barely. It's a loose association that's there and is important to mention, but it's not something to focus on at all. "Palaces" then heads back into the monolithic sludge direction, bordering on a doom laden atmosphere at points, exhibiting another break with clean guitars and jazzy percussion that gets a little more stuttered rhythmically, before later caving into a cacophony of noise that runs into an unlisted track of more choral atmospheres (eventually building back into a wall of crushing distorted chord progressions). Every song runs into the next and flows fairly well, not like one large piece, but definitely like a cohesive body of work. Fucking impressive overall. The production crushes. I have not one complaint. The clarity of the vocals really lets the amazing texture of the screams (it really must be head to be understood) shine, the guitars are heavy as hell, the drums sound perfect, the bass is in there playing its part... And the mix is quite tight, with no vacant space and a level of clarity that fits in nicely with the intricacies of the music. It sounds fucking phenomenal, really.
-NO COMPLY / XBRÄINIAX split 7” -to live a lie records- 4,00
Michigan's Xbrainiax have created a brilliant, angry, and somewhat nerdy fast hardcore/violence sound, akin to if NEOS or LARM sat down and listened to classic powerviolence and threw in more metallic guitars. Nocomply is still alive and kicking after all this time. Two man lo-fi grind from Florida that harkens Saturday Morning Powerviolence era Godstomper
-OREN AMBARCHI “state motors” 12” -westernvinyl records 16,50
Oren Ambarchi's Stacte Motors, is the most recent addition to the Western Vinyl portrait series. Additionally, these pieces continue the Stacte series started in 1998 with Ambarchi's first self-released solo recordings. Similar to the 4 previous editions of the series, which explored one idea at length, Stacte Motors is an experiment in exciting instruments with a spinning motor with strings attached. The resulting recordings are metallic walls of minimalist drones, both fearless and dreamy.
-POLICY OF 3 s/t 7” -bloodlink records- 5,00
mid 90's emo band, in one line with bands like indian summer, current, closure...
-RUSSIAN CIRCLES “upper ninety” 7” -suicide squeeze records- 6,00
These Chicago newcomers are quickly becoming the talk of the town. Trailing on the heels of Pelican (and touring with them), Russian Circles write heavy-metal instrumental progish-rock anthems. After a fairly intense (read: competitive) courting process they decided to put their forthcoming full length on local imprint Flameshovel. This special ltd. ed 7” is the third in the label’s series and was commemorated by the band appearing at the recent Suicide Squeeze anniversary shows. Less mathy than Don Cab, and a bit gentler than Pelican this band will appeal to fans of both
-SLAYER “christ illusion” lp us-press 19,00
The original Slayer is back. As soon as Christ Illusion starts, there is no denying that Slayer still has "it," whatever "it" is. This album marks the first time that the original lineup has been in the studio together since the 1990 classic, Seasons in the Abyss. That combination of Tom Araya, Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman, and the returning Dave Lombardo, is a force to be reckoned with. Slayer has been at the forefront of thrash metal from the beginning pioneering the genre with albums such as South of Heaven and the landmark Reign in Blood.
-SNAKES “happy” lp –adult swim records- 11,00
old DC legend w/ awesome postpunk rock -- history
-Steven R. Smith “the anchorite” LP –important records- 19,00This is the 7th release in Important Records' ongoing Arts & Crafts Series. The Anchorite is a full length vinyl only release packaged in a hand made linocut created, printed, signed and numbered by Stephen R. Smith. Limited edition of 500. Eleventh full-length solo release from multi-instrumentalist, instrument builder Stephen R. Smith. In contrast to the more labored arrangements of many of his solo records, The Anchorite was recorded in the winter of 2005 without the use of overdubs straight to stereo 2-track using three separate amplifiers and a combination of loops, tapes and live performance. As the title suggests, the record focuses on the nature of solitude and draws upon a black spaciousness seemingly born in the spirit of Popul Vuh, Arvo Part, and Medieval troubadour music.
Stephen R. Smith also releases records under the Hala Strana moniker which focus on the traditional music of Eastern Europe, and is a member of the San Francisco improvisational group Thuja. He has recorded for numerous labels including Catsup Plate, Soft Abuse, Emperor Jones, Last Visible Dog, Jewelled Antler, and Darla
-SOUVENIR’S “young america” tape -the perpetual motion machine records- 6,--
Richmond Virginia’s Souvenir's Young America creates sounds that could be called electronic, metal, prog, and ambient all at once. Yet it all works together completely. Epic, spiraling dirges with keyboards, percussion, samples, guitars, accordion, xylophone, cello, and much more fill these songs. Recorded, these sounds are layered together as if creating the textures of a painting
-THE PARTY OF HELICOPTERS / S PROCESS split 7” –track star records- 6,00
-THE BAD FORM “lights out” 7” –mad at the world records- 6,00
One of the least pretentious or cliched outright punk albums I've had come into my hands since the likes of Texas Terri and the Stiff Ones. The Bad Form sound like the kind of punk rock that was coming out of the CA hardcore scene in the early, early 80's like the Child Molesters or Eddie and the Subtitles. Vocally they sound like a New York hardcore band called Crawlpappy. Muppet-like vocals but full of gusto and drive. The lyrics are grim and violent, written solidly. This was a fun listen bordering on garage and punk. The guitar is gutteral but full of Black Flags style leads. This was a great surprise and lets know that punk is not dead.
-THE BODY / GET KILLED split 7” -corleane records – 5,00
GET KILLED are a bunch of kids living in the Providence area having fun and playing good thrashy hardcore. One of the dudes was in ANOTHER DEAD JULIET, one of the girls is a full-time roadie, one of the other dudes is in a ton of other bands (including SURROUNDED BY ASSHOLES). Another guy is a great graphic designer and then there is a girl who has nearly perfect teeth which just keep getting tighter with braces. THE BODY is two men and several amps, one drum set and one guitar turned up really, really loud. Two of the nicest most upbeat dudes playing the most wicked evil rock. Limited edition of 1,000 copies
-UNBROKEN / GROUNDWORK split 7” –bloodlink records- 5,00
-URBAN WASTE “s/t” lp –mad at the world records- 11,00
URBAN WASTE was part of the New York renaissance of hardcore punk in the early 1980s. Much more raw, visceral, and overtly confrontational than their New York punk predecessors, these boys were contemporaries to Reagan Youth, the earliest incarnation of the Beastie Boys, and the Bad Brains. This is a reissue of the sole EP by one of the most sought after and enigmatic bands from the earliest days of New York hardcore. Despite the obscurity of the original release, Urban Waste was made famous through their signature style of blown-out, over-the-top hardcore punk replete with trademark menacing buzzsaw guitars and piercing vocals. Roger of Agnostic Front has said of them; "Urban Waste is the band that got me into hardcore."
-VIOLENT ARREST “s/t” lp –deranged records- 11,50
Twenty years later and they're still at it! Featuring three quarters of the former members of the U.K.'s original hardcore blasters RIPCORD, VIOLENT ARREST burst forth with twelve brand new rippers, rippling with the same urgency and controlled rage that brought about the original notoriety of these west coast thrashers. Former RIPCORD and SPITE vocalist Steve barks his usual socially aware lyrics, former RIPCORD, HERESY and CAN'T DECIDE guitarist Steve 'Baz' Ballam chops his Boston hardcore influenced guitar, former EXCREMENT OF WAR vocalist Leigh brings subtle D-Beat tones to the bass, and former RIPCORD, CAN'T DECIDE and SPITE drummer John cuts a precise thrash behind the kit. The outcome is a razor sharp hardcore assault harkening back to their eighties roots, clocking in at around a minute a song along with a cover of JERRY'S KIDS' 'This Is Boston Not L.A.' contribution 'Wired', that along with their name, stands as a glaring example of their influence, VIOLENT ARREST pick the baton up right where they left their classic hardcore lineage!
-WAR HUNGRY “divine/demonic” 7” -brain granade records- 5,--
Wilkes-Barre's War Hungry, along with Brain Grenade Records present the debut effort featuring members of Cold World and combining crushing metallic guitar riffs inspired by Entombed and Exhorder with classic heavy hardcore breakdowns in the vein of Integrity and Sheer Terror
-WILLIAM MARTYR 17 “s/t” 7” -file thirteen records- 4,50
quality overlooked mid 90s emo
-XASTHUR “nocturnal poisoning” 2xlp –southern lord records- 20,00
Since 1999 Xasthur has been releasing material as a one man entity. He has released thirteen albums that have helped to lay a solid and stable foundation for his career. Without any live performances but a lot of work in the studio, Xasthur has become a very credible and untouchable figure in the North American Black Metal scene. Expect more productivity and much more visibility from Xasthur in the future. Xasthur will not quit until the END!!! Xasthur does NOT play "war" metal or "black/death" metal, nor viking or retro trash!!! Just terrifying misanthropic BLACK METAL!!! If the USBM "scene" wants nothing to do with Malefic or Xasthur for this, then FUCK OFF to all of you!!!
