BOX ELDERS - Alice and friends LP/CD 13.90/11.90 EUR

PUNK. Box Elders is the brainchild of brothers Clayton and Jeremiah McIntyre, who began making music in Friday night goof-off sessions that originally featured their mom on drums. Adopting a name from the bugs that infested their house, they started gigging around Omaha, Nebraska, and soon added drummer Dave Goldberg, who signed on after catching the band at a free performance in a local park. Rather than search for a fourth band member, the McIntyres suggested Goldberg play both drums and organ simultaneously. It took some practice. In January 2008, BOX ELDERS released their debut 7-inch on Grotto Records and spent much of the year touring the USA. The fuzzy, off-kilter pop of the record caught the attention of Memphis, Tennessee’s Goner Records and earned them a slot at the label’s annual music festival, Goner Fest, as well as a spot on the Goner roster, alongside acts ranging from GUITAR WOLF and JAY REATARD to Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Ty Segall, and Reigning Sound. As soon as they returned to Omaha, BOX ELDERS began working on their first full-length, "Alice and friends", named after their favorite cult-run vegan Korean BBQ joint. Originally released on Kranium Records a couple years ago in a small run of only 200 copies, this EP was just TOO good to keep it out of print and unavailable for mass consumption. 5 tracks here, and for sure none of them will dissapoint. If you’ve heard their LP or past few 7"s, you know they are a Swedish Hardcore-Punk powerhouse. They have a hard sound to describe as it’s pummeling with power, yet still keeping the melody and staying catchy enough to remember what’s going on ever after listening. NITAD have been on their A game for the last couple years and it doesn’t look they plan on slowing down, as we have a new 7" by them coming out in the next month or so. (2009/NO WAY)

As with "Time bomb high school", "Love and curses" strikes a balance between soulful rockers and beautiful ballads. HARDCORE. The SETUP have returned to the studio with a take-no-prisoners approach. This new outing sees them evolving in their signature sound, whilst tuning down a notch and adding the rawest and most vicious riffs they've conjured so far, creating a dark, gloomy and above all heavy album, which is bound to pass the test of time. Since "Minister of death" a lot of things changed for The SETUP. Original singer Dries quit the band and a new vocalist was found with Kris Deweerdt. After that original guitar player and co-founder Andries took the bass in BORN FROM PAIN. Although tough times, the future for The SETUP got never in danger for a second. Now they're back with a devastating EP "Crawl & reign", ready to continue the road to the top.
