Nobody was expecting this to be as good as it is and due to the fact that they blend Funeral, Stoner and Ambient Doom Metal styles so well, this should be high on many an doomster's shopping list. Their last record was somewhat unique in both the band's impressive musical abilities and their wider than usual range of influences in an otherwise generic cut and paste metalcore format. But this time though it's just as technical and over the top, plus they're now bringing in progressive rock/metal, jazz, and other influences that actually get quite promising on occasion. POWERVIOLENCE. This is the first split release as follow the nice demotape by CYBORG from Chicago. These guys also play in WEEKEND NACHOS, but here they stick to the Powerviolence sound like the earlier W.N. releases, Hardcore-Punk smashers between crude 90s Fastcore and maniac Grindcore. INFEST, SPAZZ and CROSSED OUT come to mind. THE AFTERNOON GENTLEMEN can be called the UK's brutal answer to, and they're no doubt as tight as CYBORG. Their "Pissed Again" 7" had awesome reviews comparing them to a whole slew of
Grind/Powerviolence bands like DESPISE YOU, HELLNATION, INSECT WARFARE and SPAZZ), all adequate comparisons but they are still their own band. A must! (2011/RSR)

FLIES AROUND IT - Same 7'' 4.50 EUR

EMO/HARDCORE. Here is the debut 3-song release from Asheville, NC's FLIES AROUND IT. While this is definitely throwback emotional Hardcore, this is not a clone. Sure, this could've pretty easily fit along with many bands on the early-mid 90s Gravity Records roster, but something with sort of raw, fierce emotion doesn't seem to pop up anymore. Think if UNWOUND in '91 were listening to lots of HÜSKER DÜ's ''Zen Arcade'' and getting heavily into guitar pedal experimentation. Half of this group are either current or past members of KAKISTOCRACY. This is also the only recorded evidence of ex-drummer Steve Ritt (Brainworms, Flesh Eating Creeps). (2011/HUMDINGER)

METAL. MASTODON need no introduction as they have become one of the premier bands in current American metal. "The Hunter," the follow-up to 2009's critically embraced ''Crack The Skye'', was recorded in the band's hometown of Atlanta as well as in Los Angeles with producer Mike Elizondo and doesn't stray far from their previous formula of epic and technical Metal. OLD MAN MARKLEY - Party shack 7'' 4.90 EUR

FOLK-PUNK. Since their acclaimed first full-length ''Guts ‘n Teeth'', which debuted at #8 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart, OLD MAN MARKLEY have been touring with reckless abandon. Like some sort of haphazard Punk/Bluegrass twister indiscriminately sucking in skeptical listeners and spitting ‘em out smiling and jigging, OMM continue to make believers out of anyone within earshot. Eager to build on their growing popularity they’ve been strummin’, pickin’ and howlin’ their way back and forth across the US, Canada and Europe for a year straight and they aim to keep the party rolling on a fall tour with NOFX and ANTI-FLAG. Although their time on the road hasn’t left them much room for recording new material, they were recently able to sneak into the studio and lay down a couple new tracks for the ''Party Shack'' 7”. The title track is quintessential OLD MAN MARKLEY in both name and content. Lightning fast banjo, violin, and guitars play off sweet harmonies about drunken revelry, perfectly summing up an OMM live performance. PANIKOS - Awakening from lethargy LP 11.90 EUR

CRUSTCORE. PANIKOS was one of the classic Crust bands from the '90s that made "Greek Crust" something notable to collectors. Their previous records are to be filed with CHAOTIC END, FORGOTTEN PROPHECY, NAYTIA, ANASA STAXTIi, NEGATIVE STANCE, etc etc. The Greeks took the classic English and American Crust sounds and transformed them into their own unique ideas and expressions. So imagine my delight to be able to release the first new PANIKOS recordings in over 10 years. And it was worth the wait, they're better than ever. This record uses AMEBIX and NEUROSIS as a starting point and then takes those ideas in a distinctly more rocking direction. Clean and heavy sound that feels natural and organic rather than overproduced and sterile. (2011/SPHC)

PUNK. This is the final release from the Chattanooga-Asheville Punk band PRINCESS THUNDERSTORM. This was the natural progression of QUEERWULF (whom 2/5 of the band were founding members of) maintaining their
aggressively angry region Rock ways, but PTS strayed a little more towards a focused, somewhat poppy straight up Rock'n'Roll Punk sound by the end (maybe due to less substances in their lives?). This is the kind of music you trash your room to, but you're dancing around in good spirits while doing so. (2011/HUMDINGER)

POST-PUNK. Final 7" from this British Post-Punk band featuring some familiar faces. While their earlier recordings had an upbeat, jerky sound somewhere between X-RAY SPEX and the rawer early Post-Punk bands, these final 2 songs from the band are downbeat, dirgey, and depressing. You still get Ralph's trademark weird guitar, but the emphasis here is on the dark atmosphere and brooding melodies. It's a shame they're done, as these 2 songs show an intriguing and unique change in direction. RIP SCEPTRES. (2011/SORRY STATE)

STONER/SLUDGE. This debut LP from Asheville, NC's SOFT OPENING displays 6 tracks from a band that has evolved their sound into one of the most sonically mesmerizing experiences to have popped up in a long time. While no band comes to mind with a sound quite like theirs, the melting pot of influence is somewhat massive. Part Stoner-Sludge, part Psych attack which seems to range from the mentalities of HAWKWIND to SPACEMEN 3, part apathetic comfort. It's not heavy enough to be Metal or Hardcore, it's not so spacey enough to be shoegaze, and they have found a sweet spot that keeps them from falling into either the overly-noodley or Drone/repetitive worlds.
