KNAPSACK true to form/ effortless 7" (alia records - two killer songs by this emo outfit from the mid90ies. During their time together they have helped establish a new genre of music and influenced a group of younger bands that have recently gained attention. Nevertheless, even while being tagged "Emo Core" and being a part of the post-hardcore scene from the beginning, they have always been outside of the boundaries of the Emo sound and have many varied influences to their music. APPLESEED CAST Low Level Owl Volumes I+II 3xLP (gilead media - In 2000, The Appleseed Cast created something that would soon change the face of indie rock as all had come to know it. Produced by Ed Rose (Limbeck, Get Up Kids, Casket Lottery, Coalesce, Forstella Ford, etc!) and released on CD by Deep Elm in two separate volumes, "Low Level Owl" created a genre; it set a standard that no one could deny. For the first time these two volumes are presented together on vinyl, in their entirety, in a gatefold 3xlp with revamped artwork. Strictly limited to a one time pressing of 1000 copies, of which only 600 are available to stores. For five years fans of The Appleseed Cast all over the world have been begging for this. BJORK, BRANT & THE BROS - Somera Sol LP (duna - Brant Bjork . . .desert boogieman decided to find a band to back his trip. The Bros is what they’re called . . .The Bros are what they are. Dylan Roche on bass, Cortez on guitar, and Alfredo Hernandez formerly of Kyuss and QOTSA, on drums. “Make no mistake . . . we’re a real band” Brant says. Musically speaking The Bros bring it. Organic Rock. It grooves. It Flows. It’s psychedelic. It’s tough. It’s beautiful. It’s Classic. The future is now and Brant Bjork and The Bros are here. Brant Bjork hails from Palm Desert, California, where he began gigging at the age of 13. By high school Brant had begun Kyuss with locals Josh Homme, Chris Cockrell, (later Nick Oliveri) and John Garcia. Kyuss was signed to Elektra and became the first desert rock band to achieve international success by spearheading a musical movement that brought heavy and psychedelic sounds back to rock and roll and served as a prototype for all “desert/stoner rock”. In 1993, Brant left Kyuss and moved to Humboldt to flip pizzas and play soccer. Too much rain moved him back to his natural habitat where he started an independent record label, EL CAMINO (now DUNA RECORDS); played drums in hardcore punk band De-Con; and played guitar with desert legend Mario Lalli in Fatso Jetson. In 1996, Bjork hooked up again with Homme, to begin the DESERT SESSIONS saga and work on what became Queens Of The Stone Age. However, Brant decided to take the road less traveled and rock with his surf buddies Fu Manchu, an adventure which took him into the studio for five records and around the world in four years.) 18.50

BUILT TO SPLILL you in reverse DLP (warner re-issue Built to Spill haven't released an album for five years, and the time off seems to have rejuvenated the band -- You in Reverse is full of fire and energy. The bandmembers play with a thrilling blend of abandon and sensitivity on this mix of accessible guitar rockers, twisting and turning guitar workouts, and somber balladry with enough intelligence and emotion to put groups half their age to shame (and by the looks of the gray in their beards, they are getting up there). Many of the songs on You in Reverse are midtempo ballads, some quiet and autumnal ("Traces"), most trippy and bursting with wild and dramatic guitar solos ("The Wait," "Gone"). All of them are quite heart-rending, with Doug Martsch's melancholy everyman vocals and the emotion (in his voice but especially in the guitars) flowing like tears from the speakers. Most of the tracks also feature spiraling guitar solos and climaxes that conjure up images of the bandmembers on-stage at an outdoor stadium jamming their beards off as the crowd goes bananas. These songs are impressive, but the album really shines on the tracks that boost the tempo. "Conventional Wisdom" is a raging rocker that rides an inspired guitar melody into alt-rock guitar nirvana, sounding like the best tune Dinosaur Jr. never wrote (although those slackers never would have thrown a chamber music-inspired instrumental bridge into the middle of a song before freaking out with an epic solo). "Mess with Time" charges ahead like an angry rhino, kicking up guitar sparks and sounding a lot like classic Wipers in the process. Best of all is the amazing "Goin' Against Your Mind," an almost nine-minute guitar explosion that kicks off the album in breathtaking style. By the time it's through playing, you'll be hard-pressed to imagine a way the rest of the album could stand up to its intensity and drama. That the record does manage to acquit itself superbly is quite an accomplishment. Though there are no great surprises on You in Reverse, it is one of Built to Spill's strongest efforts, and anyone who has followed their career knows that this is high praise indeed. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide) 22.00

BUILT TO SPILL Keep It Like A Secret DLP (warner re-issue - Perhaps to squelch the idea that Built To Spill were more about guitar histrionics than songs, the band's 1999 follow-up to Perfect From Now On was crammed full of pop songs, each one a continual surprise brimming with invention. As a songwriter and guitarist, Built to Spill's Doug Martsch has "a firm background in remembering," as he sings in "Bad Light," on the band's beguiling new album, Keep It Like a Secret. Martsch's zigging, zagging vocal melodies and explosive, loud-soft-loud hook dynamics are right out of the Pixies and Husker Du song manuals. There are traces of Lou Reed and the hyperwriting of '66 Bob Dylan in Secret's lyric mix of run-on, conversational) 22.00

BULIT TO SPILL Perfect From Now On DLP (warner re-issue - The band's third album and first for a major label sees them sacrificing none of their signifying elements of guitar attack and melody. If anything, the band drifts further into space with tracks such as the stunning, nine-minute "Untrustable." Far from the simple pop of earlier releases, this is the sound of one band expanding the horizons of indie rock. Did progressive rock get a bad rap from the post-punk generation? Lately, everyone from instrumental outfits such as Tortoise to four-track whiz kids such as Olivia Tremor Control has been reinvestigating the world of the epic song suite and the mind-twisting tempo change – with a vigor that suggests that maybe Rick Wakeman was) 22.00

CANDLEMESS King Of The Grey Islands DLP (nuclear blast - The band`s ninth effort, “King Of The Grey Islands”, continues the path of the last album. The master of Doom, Leif Edling himself, had the following to say about the concept behind the 10 new tracks: “The album is a concept story about depression and suicide in the modern society. CHUCK RAGAN los feliz LP (no idea - Hot Water Music frontman Chuck Ragan recorded these songs live in Los Feliz in Los Angeles, capturing a spontaneous performance in an intimate setting. Featured are acoustic versions of Ragan's solo material as well as one Hot Water Music song and one Bob Dylan cover.) 12.00

COREA "Quien encuentra a la madre conoce a los hijos" DLP ("Under the long title of ‘Quien encuentra a la madre conoce a los hijos’ here it is the second record for Corea. It is a black / black 2x12” where they show 8 new songs that go from the Breach and Switchblade influences in the heaviest parts to the more subtle parts of tricks and games played between guitars and synths.
Getting away of the often artificial sound of some experimental bands, a great recording production gives the warmth needed to express the deep astonishing soundscapes that go out from the creativity of these guys. DIE PRINCESS DIE Self-titled 12'' LP (rococo records - "Featuring ex-members of Camera Obscura, Freedom From Saturn, and Radio Wendy. A towering wall of sick, invisible sound so loud it flaps your pant legs and shakes your teeth loose from their shiny pink gums. Their sound is big, thick, loud, and dense. It's tough to tell where the guitars end and the bass begins. "From the dark-electro intro songÂ…to the end of the album, this CD is filled with all sorts of fun moody noise that can go from making you dance to making you go into a corner where you curl up into a ball and weep." - No-Fi Magazine) 12.50

DOWN TO NOTHING the most LP (revelation - Down To Nothing's Revelation debut full-length, "The Most," is a fully realized outlet for their sound, melding their energy and strength with a newfound melody. With influences ranging from Gorilla Biscuits and Judge to local Richmond, VA legends Four Walls Falling, "The Most" cements Down To Nothing's place at the forefront of hardcore. Recorded at The Outpost with Jim Siegel (Outbreak, Have Heart, Blacklisted), the thick guitars and barreled drums give an accurate replication of their infamous live show.) 11.50

ELENI MANDELL Miracle of Five LP (ltd to 335) (heart of champion - It's difficult to review any Eleni Mandell album without using the words "torchy" and "chanteuse," and Miracle of Five -- her sixth release -- is no exception. However, this recording was approached uniquely. Producer/keyboardist Andy Kaulkin captured Mandell solo, singing the songs while strumming on her nylon-stringed guitar, overdubbing the rest of the band later. While that might seem a bit artificial for such rootsy, jazz-tinged music, the results justify the means. Mandell sounds relaxed and there is a spaciousness to the material resulting from Kaulkin's ability to add and subtract instruments at will. Mandell's voice has shifted from its once edgy PJ Harvey timbre to a far more luxurious, breathy style, similar to Aimee Mann, especially on the languorous "Salt Truck." This is hushed, melancholy music that remains sparse, even stark, despite the addition of such relatively exotic accompaniment as harp, celeste, clarinet and vibes (from X drummer D.J. Bonebrake). The always impressive Nels Cline is credited with guitars, dobro and "weird sounds." He restrains his typically avant-garde, jazzy excursions to bring unusual tones and textures to the project. Kaulkin applies these instruments with the care and detail-oriented touch of a painter, dabbing them into the recordings to provide color but never letting the few solos steal the spotlight from Mandell's mellifluous voice and sharp lyrics. The words are printed in the booklet which makes it easy to follow along as the singer approaches relationships -- good, bad, stagnating, improving and dissolving -- with a sharp poetic grace fleshed out by the gorgeous music. She finds the nooks and crannies in uncomplicated words, bringing layers of meaning to a deceptively simple lyric such as "Your eyes are the same eyes that you had yesterday, so you know who you once were." THE FALCON FIVE - We Are Falcon And You Don't 12inch (narshardaa - WOAH! The boys from Würzburg with six fuckin' amazing groovy post punk songs. Little weird and really melodic. Reminds me a little bit of LES SAVY FAV, but who the fuck cares? Give it a try. Perfect record for the upcoming summer.THE FALCON FIVE formed as kind of a power trio without a name back in 2005. After showing his amazing singing skills at a rehearsal, Andreas joined a few months later to roughhouse the microphone. Henceforth, the band was called THE FALCON FIVE - well, you do the math. First show was in November 2005 at Nuremburg's Endzeit Festival. All dressed up in blue denim, the Würzburgers stoked quite a few people and set off a huge knife fight afterwards. Fortunately, no one got hurt all that badly. Featuring members of überdoomers OMEGA MASSIF and Bad Bocklet's very own SHOKEI, THE FALCON FIVE neither deliver a downtuned drone mayhem nor spastic "emo" songs which change from 3/4 to 5/8 meter every twenty seconds. They are rather into a straightforward rhythm with a dancy twist. Imagine WIPERS, ABBA and infamous krautsters ASH RA TEMPEL munching away on cotton candy at the local fairground and you got the idea. Well, at least the very basic idea. With lyrics tackling subjects like evil robots, huge magnets and white rabbits, they are far away from the preaching-to-the-converted which got all too usual in modern hardcore - actually, they are far away from modern hardcore per se.) 9.00

FEIST reminder LP (polydor - Feist first caught our attention with her guest appearances on Kings of Convenience's last album, but I gotta say her previous solo stuff didn't quite live up to expectations. (The remixes are top-notch though - check the sidebar.) This new album is a different matter: filled with subtle smokey folk-pop and wisely-chosen collaborators, this is the record we've been hoping Feist would make. The album is bookended with two great, similar sounding slow-motion collaborations - Jamie Liddell on "So Sorry(1)" and KoC's Eirik Glambek Boe on "How My Heart Behaves(2)" - but the tracks in between are totally varied. Check "My Moon My Man(3)," "Sea Lion(4)", "I Feel It All(5)" and "Brandy Alexander" (Chuck Palahniuk reference? A woman after my own heart!). 13 tracks; 50 minutes. Recommended.) 18.50

HELIOS CREED - Kiss To The Brain LP (amp rep – a few copies. Probably Creed's best overall record. Transpsychedelicspacewarped punkmetal madness. "XL-35," "Legs," and "Throw Away the Rind" are killer cuts, and the whole CD is almost the aural equivalent of a 50s sci-fi B movie. Silly perhaps, but far more inventive and sincere than just about anything around these days.) 12.00

Hey Colossus - Project:Death LP (wakusai/ shifty - It's the return of British sludge bludgeoners Hey Colossus, whose prior releases, including a split LP with Japanese doomsters Dot [.], we've recommended. Rhythmic and rumbling, this band plays a heavy hybrid of noisy punk and post rock, clearly conversant with both the unlikely extremes of krautrock and death metal. On Project: Death, the influence of the latter results in parts of such tracks as "On The Pleasure Of Hating" for short stretches approaching the pummelling tranciness of the Boredoms' Super Roots 3 (to reference a reissue recently reviewed). Shouting vox and down-tuned guitars also put these guys in league with such not-metal-but-even-scarier acts as Burmese and Unsane, their grinding grooves awash with an almost psychedelic level of FX (someone in the band plays nothing but Korg Kaoss Pad, apparently!). Menacing, murky, massive, murderous.)11.00

INDIAN unquiet sky DLP (seventh rule - Indian is a Chicago-based trio whose brand of doom is more akin to that of Eyehategod than the earliest or latest incarnations of the genre, and their distinctively black metal vocals immediately set them apart from the pack. This is stripped down hate doom, very much akin to their late Chicago brethren Buried at Sea or Portland, Maine’s Ocean. The forays into southern sludge grooves and the occasional faster pace add some color as well. Like most bands of this nature, it takes awhile for the full effect of Indian to sink in. It’s a massive sound, almost confrontational in nature. Fans of this style of music will be raving about this one for awhile.) 18.50

IS - Ostentatiously White one-sided 12'' (ltd to 150) (rococo – records. Just a few! "Ostentatiously White is an assault of abrasive elements dedicated to the active listener. Utilizing turntables, found sounds, pedal noise, home built circuits, vocal disembodiment's and other various gadgetry's; this is not to be taken seriously in the most serious of times. ") 17.50

JULIETTE MITTES, the - April/June LP (rococo records - Available now! Full color printed sleeve, on black vinyl. As described by the band: "April/June...recorded in our rehearsal room first part of 2006 in Leiden, The Netherlands. The tracks are from two different sessions hence April/June (we like to keep our titles simple). The idea was to make a cyclical work (round like an lp) so there's no side A or B. The listener can start anywhere. The tracks are just there...they do not really start or end and they seem to add to each other somehow after a while (at least that's my experience)... Although the tracks feel like a relaxed ride at times, they where recorded at the usual intense volume levels...really, really loud! Don't know how they came out this way... All four tracks had this same 'relaxed' feeling about them so that's why we decided to put them together. Our tracks have no name, no number, they are what they are..." ltd to 300 copies) 15.00

KIT broken voyage LP (upset the rhythm - This excellent debut album from Oakland's Kit comes after a number of split 7" releases alongside Wives, Captain Ahab and the mighty Deerhoof. Kit in fact have a great deal in common with Deerhoof: both bands have a penchant for juxtaposing visceral no-wave guitars against blissful pop vocals, utilising some pretty left-of-field production techniques along the way. By no means are Kit as easy to pin down as that, however: the free noise abandon of 'Maps' propels them into the sort of punk netherworld Boredoms hang around in, while the nursery rhyme garage of 'Forest' is similarly barmy. Single potential comes from 'Fake Broken Legs', which sounds like Melt Banana produced by DAT Politics, slamming unintelligible, stuttering vocals against cheerfully out-of-tune synth hooks. Proving that Broken Voyage isn't merely an album of energetic, hipster avant-rock, 'Nautical Lament' encroaches on some altogether murkier territory, weaving some haunted electronics and dissonant dulcimer passages in between all the jagged riffing. It might seem all too brief (clocking in at just over twenty minutes), but Broken Voyage is an exceptionally enjoyable debut with far more ideas crammed into it than its short duration could possibly suggest. Highly recommended.) 13.50

K.K. Rampage - Without Feelings one-sided 12'' (rococo records. Ltd to 150. A brand new one-sided twelve inch from KK Rampage, the undisputed Kings of Chicago. After taking the noise rock world by storm with Sides E and F (Rococo Records) KK Rampage are back with much sharper pop sensibilities and a beautiful take on romance and raw emotion. Balancing relentless experimentation and polished pop imperfection KKR continue on fearless, imperceptible, switching gears between heaven and hell on the highway of death. Sure to be one of the most seminal Pop-Damaged-Noise records of all time, ''Without Feelings'' will leave you with a broken heart and a raging hard-on.) 15.00

LATTERMAN ...We Are Still Alive LP (no idea - NY's Latterman return with their third full-length of pop-punk fun and DIY ethics. This band has spent years creating a reputation of being one of the hardest working bands around, touring and making friends while playing some catchy melodic punk along the lines of The Lawrence Arms and Against Me!. Now available on colored vinyl.)12.00

MONARCH die tonight LP (throne records – LP vinyl + foldout poster. 666 hand-numbered copies.
This one is their follow up to the former LP "speak of the sea". That was an LP released on the 6-6-6 which lasted for a few months only. This brand new one "die tonight" heads the same direction, so get your copy before it's too late. Two new songs clocking at ca. 20 minutes each, starting off where the "speak of the sea" ones left. Very similar in sound and shape, sort of a continuation.
An apocalyptical, suffocating and terrifying sound which emanates from their Sunno and Sovtek amps, from their impossible-tempo war drums, and from the ripping throat of the warrior queen. Nonetheless Monarch have been compared to the legends of this genre (Corrupted, Burning Witch, Sunno, etc.), and record after record, Monarch are proving these comparisons are accurate and true. Monarch deserve a place in the throne by their own values.) 12.00

NATIONAL, the „boxer“ LP (matador - As a follow up to their highly acclaimed album "Alligator", New York via Ohio quintet The National release "Boxer". Boxer was produced and mixed by the band and Peter Katis (Interpol, Spoon), and engineered by Greg Giorgio. The record as mostly recorded at Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT. Additional recording was done by The National and Brandon Reid in Brooklyn, NY, and White Sulphur Springs, WV. Boxer was mastered by Fred Kevorkian (Willie Nelson, Regina Spektor, Ryan Adams). TOOL - laterus ltd DLP (volcano – records - Unfortunately, we can't really discuss how fucking unbelievable this record is (and it is!) without first addressing the skeptics and the naysayers. I have long been a champion of Tool and urged people to check them out, regardless of their preconceived notions of them and the scene that for some reason (which we'll address in a second) embraces them and in doing so, does them a huge disservice (I mean a disservice as far as them being taken seriously by people other than nu-metal fans, 'cause let's be honest, that scene did make them rich and famous and free to make music as fucked up as this). But much like the Deftones, even more so, Tool have used their popularity to exist in relative freedom, with each record getting weirder and weirder, but somehow selling more and more copies. C'mon! This shit is far out! It seems inconceivable to me that this is one of the most popular bands in the U.S. and popular with a lot of people, who if they really did like this record, should also be digging Joy Division and Neurosis and Ash Ra Tempel and Voi Vod and death metal but they're not. YOU are though. And therefore YOU should check this out. Lateralus is dark and brooding, rhythmic and atonal. Beautifully complex, with insane time signatures, bizarre tunings and huge riffs. A doom rock epic, skillfully forced into some completely alien prog/metal/ambient shape. Tense and droning tribal workouts, pummelling double bass, chugging power chords, whispered feathery stretches of ambience, and great fucking songs. Misanthropic lyrics and amazing (sometimes shrieked, but more often sung) vocals. Ultra dynamic and staggeringly technical. Great parts are stretched to their breaking point, where they cease to be just great parts, and instead become torturously tense. And so satisfying. Obviously, you already know whether you -think- you like or dislike Tool. But if you think you dislike Tool, maybe it's time to think again. (aquarius))) 37.00

WOE COLOSSUS s/t 12" (state of distress - The merging of two groups into one, London behemoths Hey Colossus and Southend's own Woe, to create the amazing Woe Colossus is showcased here on this heavyweight twelve inch with interesting results. The first side is meant to be a reworking of the Miles Davis classic 'In a Silent Way' and is built on a lazy stoner-like riff that really builds with the use of saxophones, two drummers and what sounds like a tonne of amps. It drifts in and out of intensity but really hits the spot, maintaining enough interest through its long span, you can tell Hey Colossus are at work here through the guitar tone alone, but obviously the four members of Woe have had a more jazz and improv-like influence on the whole affair and its nice to hear such a daring coupling working so well, let alone be released. Second side, and more experimental, is 'Vanilla' an apparently original piece that brings to mind moments of Tom Waits and Sunn0)) as unexpected influences. Largely based on a lurching, malevolent rhythm, this track slowly builds as it reaches a noise-like conclusion, its use of unconventional sounds and the same lethargic beat all the way through really create a sense of claustrophobia. Recommended for those who like any of the previous influences, but for fans of solely Hey Colossus's previous output, be warned, this is far more evil and droning than anything they've done before and I imagine it would be the same live. GOVERNMENT WARNING arrest 7” (grave mistake records - The title track has a mid-tempo west coast punk sound and that distinguishes Government Warning from the pure thrash revivalists. In fact, that’s a part of their overall sound—I can hear early Circle Jerks in “Safe and Sound,” for instance. That song deals with a bit of “controversy,” as seen in the letters pages of Maximum Rock ‘n Roll, over Kenny using some perhaps ill-advised terminology when they played in Raleigh and the band covering Vile. His reply is that he never meant it, “political correctness has become a plague” and “I’m not intolerant/I just don’t give a fuck.” Hmm… I have mixed feelings. I don’t like when ANYONE acts self-righteous (and I resemble that remark) and some folks do need to be wound up, on occasion. On the other hand, using words like “faggot” from the stage is tiresome, at this point. OK, speech over. If snottiness and a bad attitude are assets, these guys have that in spades) 4.50

HUMBLE ARY/ BAILER split 7" (ash from sweat - A union between two seasoned locals. The bands have played many shows together and of course the next step is indeed, a shared record. This 7" has two Humble Ary songs on it, which are quick, moody, groovy blasts. Humble ary is doing some really interesting stuff with structure, instrumentation and themes, all tied up in a little bit more agressive sound. Flip the record and you'll hear Bailer's first two songs as a three-piece. The band has tightened up their songwriting and is moving forward full speed! Bailer is expanding their ideas and refining their technique. Awesome!) 4.00

KNIVES/ VILLABRUT split 7" (gasping fro breath - Villabrut features current and ex-members of bands such as the red scare, new brutalism and beton brut which should give you a pretty good indication of what this band might sound like. LIFE TRAP bleak reality 7" (no way out records - Nashville's Life Trap come blasting out on this debut EP with seven songs of high-speed, high-energy, early-'80s influenced hardcore punk, taking cues from local legends Koro as well as bands like Poison Idea and Articles Of Faith.) 5.00

LIVING HELL Pavor Nocturnis 7" (lookin´out records - With roots in both Connecticut and Boston, Living Hell debuted in 2006 with "Pavor Nocturnis." RED DONS Escaping Amman 7" (deranged - The Red Dons are the continuation of the Observers. After members abruptly left the band in 2005, Douglas Burns, the Observers' lead singer, artist, and primary songwriter teamed up with Hajji Husayn to continue on with the band. Next, they added Derek Skokan (Revisions) on drums and Justin Maurer (Clorox Girls) on guitar and re-named this new line-up the Red Dons. "Escaping Amman" is the group's debut release, and is perfect for fans of the Vicious, No Hope For the Kids, Gorilla Angreb, Clorox Girls, and of course the Observers.) 5.00

S.I.D.S. "my other vehicle is a stretcher" 7" + cd-r + dvd-r (goodcore/stickfigure - S.I.D.S is one of those bands the listener will always try to deconstruct. As this tendency is predictable among the literate crowd of homespun musicologists that populate the areas where S.I.D.S. is most likely to find an audience, parsing out which bands S.I.D.S. most closely resembles can be a challenge. S.I.D.S. is made up of Adam Stroupe, Josh Fauver (Deerhunter), Erin Carmichael and a cardboard cut out of Sid Vicious playing a pre-programmed Yamaha psr-540. They recorded their debut collaboration “Pullhair Rubeye” with guitars and piano on an eight track in their practice space in Brooklyn. Then they traveled to upstate New York where the record was mixed down onto a two track borrowed from a friend who bought it at a garage sale for a dollar. Just as the two were completing the mix, the two track broke down and Avey and Kria didn’t hear the mixes until two months later when they obtained another two track. Rainbow is a collaborative album between Japanese experimental doom band Boris and psychedelic guitarist Michio Kurihara. This album in particular is somewhat quiet and upbeat in sound, almost lounge-like in some parts. Wata contributes vocals to the title song, which has a music video made for it by Foodunited. Oddly, a couple of songs have another vocalist backing Takeshi. Either it could be Takeshi doing overdubs or Atsuo or Michio performing backing vocals. This could be possible, despite what the liner notes state, as Boris have mislabeled personnel before (Most notably on Vein.). Mixed & mastered at Peace Music, Tokyo. THE NATIONAL the boxer LP (matador - As a follow up to their highly acclaimed album "Alligator", New York via Ohio quintet The National release "Boxer". Boxer was produced and mixed by the band and Peter Katis (Interpol, Spoon), and engineered by Greg Giorgio. The record as mostly recorded at Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT. Additional recording was done by The National and Brandon Reid in Brooklyn, NY, and White Sulphur Springs, WV. Boxer was mastered by Fred Kevorkian (Willie Nelson, Regina Spektor, Ryan Adams) Boxer is filled with lush arrangements and sees the band including some new instrumentation and expanded musical elements including piano, trumpet and more prominent background vocals.
Gothic in its detailing but jaunty in its execution, Boxer is something far richer than orch-pop (translation: rock ‘n’ roll topped with violins). Rather, the band find ways to combine the expressive depth of composed music with the urgency of pop. It's a sound built with guitar, bass, piano and drums and festooned with brass, woodwinds, backing vocals, strings, and organs. THE NATIONAL - Alligator LP (Beggars Banquet - Another band to come careering out of NYC, The National however buck the funking trend by eschewing the 'Tonight Mathew I'm going to be... Gang Of Four' stylings and instead look to classic West Coast guitar groups as their musical touchstone. Having been steadily releasing albums for the past 6 years, The National are indie through and through and their 3rd album 'Alligator' positively brims with burnished guitar-pop goodness. Opening with the pretty melody and sun-blushed musings of 'Secret Meeting', The Nationals come across like a more palatable version of the New Radicals, allowing the music space to breathe and gradually evolve. Next up is 'Karen', a chameleon-like four minutes that sounds like Ten Benson, Nick Cave or Blue States depending what light you catch it in. Elsewhere the urgent staccato of 'Lit Up' barrels head-first into a shiny chorus full of vim and vigour, 'Baby, We'll be fine' is a string drenched dissertation of heartbreak given refreshing candour through the seemingly banal lyrics ("I'll put on an argyle sweater and put on a smile...") whilst 'All the Wine' displays a mischievous wit culled straight from Pavement with singer Matt Beringer declaring "I'm a perfect piece of ass!". Staying just the right side of the perilous Dream City Film Club vocal boundary, Beringer has a voice that is both intimate and grand which, when combined with the group's diamond sharp instrumentation, conspires to create a gloriously cloud free album.

OCEAN - Here Where Nothing Grows DLP (colored) (invada - Over the last couple of years Ocean have established themselves as an unparalleled current in the east coast metal scene. Here Where Nothing Grows is their debut full length album of 4 rogue waves clocking in at a full 75 fathoms. Here Where Nothing Grows was originally recorded by a physically and emotionally exhausted Ocean at Volume Studios in Chicago with Sanford Parker (Buried At Sea/Pelican) at the tail end of a self-destructive mini tour. The group returned home minus a drummer unhappy with the results of the Chicago sessions. With a new drummer in tow they immediately settled in to a familiar studio in Portland and began the arduous task of re-recording Here Where Nothing Grows on their own. Two months later Ocean emerged rejuvenated with a brand new testament to what Ocean is and can be. A thundering low end, crushing sloth-slow riffs and distant tortured vocals, Here Where Nothing Grows is an unprecedented doom with the three main tracks pushing over 20 minutes each.) 22.00

ROB CROW "Living Well" LP (temporary residence - Somewhere between the breakneck touring to support Pinback's breakthrough Touch and Go debut, 'Summer in Abaddon', and the release of The Ladies' debut album (his collaboration with Zach Hill of Hella/Team Sleep), the impossibly prolific Rob Crow had an epiphany: SLOW DOWN. Not coincidentally, this revelation occurred shortly after the birth of his first child (named Robertdale Crow III, of course). Crow's time at home was suddenly more important than ever. His family is all over 'Living Well', his third solo album: in the album title, the artwork (layered with dozens of family photos), and the intensely personal lyrics which document Crow's courtship with his wife, their marriage, and the subsequent birth of their first child. Not only is 'Living Well' Crow's finest solo album by a country mile, it also transcends many of Pinback's most canonic moments. XIU XIU "chapel in the chimes" 12" (nail in the coffin - “It begins with a too-steady heartbeat pulse. Someone strums piano innards as a voice near tears condenses everything wrong in its existence — not bothering with outside existences — into a handful of exsanguinated couplets. A tag team drops the piano's sustain pedal, bangs over keys twined with tuned percussives. "Jennifer Lopez (The Sweet Science Version)" begins with sawed bass nearly run down by frenzied drums before electronics from horror movies and early-'70s Moog albums, screams, chants, and rhythmic breathing clatter in. Sticks click out beats. Sticks abandoned, the Lusitania is dragged across the ocean floor with its steam whistle still hooting. A cover of Joy Division's "Ceremony" points to Xiu Xiu's influences, but their noise-joyous festooning of that band's honed arrangements don't give away their methods with original material. Xiu Xiu plays with sound and suspense as adroitly and with as much humor as early Butthole Surfers, except for singer Jamie Stewart, who appears as deeply devoted to misery as any industrial Goth-head, and as despairing of finding new timbres to give it life. BORIS vs CHOUKOKU NO NIWA split CD (inoxia - Reissued with a new metallic orange gatefold sleeve! Coupling Album of BORIS and CHOUKOKU NO NIWA. (1999) Boris's first track is music fitting to the title of the album. It's soaring drone that seems to linger on a majestic sun, setting over a vast landscape. The second is a sort of nu-metal/noise/drone experiment with psychedelic industrial noises thrown in, a bit like a droner's rave party. Choukoku No Niwa does the second half of the split in one approximately 25 minute long track. The track is divided into seven sections. Most of them are tribal sounding with grooving rock elements.) 18.00

INTERPOL our love to admire CD (capitol – NORMAL EDITION - Moving up to a major label has hardly lifted Interpol's spirits. This is a good thing. Even with the twisted Wild Kingdom album cover and bassist Carlos Dengler's unexpected Wild West makeover, on its third studio album the black-clad New York quartet still sounds inflexibly menacing, grasping tighter than ever to its doomy post-punk influences and delving further into frontman Paul Banks's emotional unrest. Everything sounds a little bigger and brighter, sure, but at their core songs like "Rest My Chemistry" and "Wrecking Ball" are heroically sinister, goaded on by prickly riffs and slow-bleeding rhythms. The group briefly jumps to life on the buzzing "Heinrich Manouver" and exhibits an unexpected dash of humor on "No I in Threesome," but it's the closing "Lighthouse" that best defines the set--a late-night lament that simply steals away into the dark. --Aidin Vaziri) 17.00

IRON MONKEY same CD (earache records - The end result is a fearsome mass of unashamed, uncompromising heaviness. If 'doom metal' is a dirty term these days, bringing to mind ageing hippies decked out in colourful flares living in a stoned-out haze, then Iron Monkey will obliterate that image in one monstrous riff. Their doom fest is a truly sick attack on the senses, and a challenge to re-invent the doom model by making every riff instantly memorable, assaulting the accepted and expected not only with its gargantuan heaviness, but with a vocal sting that rages without mercy. Anywhere else, this combination wouldn't work, but Iron Monkey make it work.
When this crushing mindblast gathers pace, it becomes an enjoyably uncomfortable experience. Extreme vocals spit a relentless stream of pent up frustration throughout, yet tracks like 'Web Of Piss' and 'Big Loader' are even able to groove along, sounding perversely pleasant as they bulldoze their way into the brain. Whilst Iron Monkey certainly don't hide
their influences, they are never as blatant as to rip them off, mutating them instead into an ugly concept for the Nineties. Iron Monkey don't blast, they don't grind, nor do they f**k about. They do rock in a big, sick way, each song a dirty, oozing trail of brutalised chords, relentless rhythms and sub-human throat annihilation.) 12.00

SLEEP holy mountain CD (earache records - Upon listening to SLEEP’s “Holy Mountain,” three things become clear. First, the members of SLEEP like BLACK SABBATH. Second, the members of SLEEP like weed and third, the members of SLEEP seem to also really like the sun, seeing as it’s mentioned in the lyrics of every song except for “The Druid.” Pure Ozzy-era SABBATH worship, with a hazy stoned sound and fantasy-inspired lyrics. You might think that with this formula all you’re going to end up with is second-rate imitation, but what you get is quite the opposite: “Holy Mountain” is a classic Stoner/Doom album.) 12.00
