ACEPHALIX - Same 7'' 4.20 EUR

HARDCORE. A brutal combination of low end metallic distortion, pummeling riffs and gnarled vocals, San Francisco's ACEPHALIX's debut 4-song 7" takes influence from all over the map of extreme music - from CELTIC FROST to CRO-MAGS and INTEGRITY, from WOLFPACK and later ANTI-CIMEX to SACRILEDGE and AXEGRINDER, but has hammered out and forged its own sound by relentless gigs around the SF Bay Area over the past year. The Arctopus' Colin Marston at the knobs on the A-side. Side B has a complete live set (clocking in at 15 minutes, it's the band's longest) recorded in Tokyo on the last night of their Japanese tour. POP-PUNK/NEW WAVE. For the past several years, a slew of 12-inches, 7-inches, and cassettes have been released by the mysterious Brooklyn artist known as BLANK DOGS. BLANK DOGS is actually singular - it's the insanely prolific one-man band of Mr. BLANK DOGS. Not too much is known about the guy behind the bedroom New Wave / Pop / Punk act and he's usually covering his face with masks or bedspreads, but that's fine. The sound is JOY DIVISION vocal lines with The CURE's synth and guitar melodies filtered through ancient, submerged keyboards and eroded recording equipment. "Under and under" is BLANK DOGS' latest and most massive release to date - a double-album housing 20 brand new songs (15 on the CD) that show off his pop chops to a greater extent than any of his previous releases. Also, for the first time, BLANK DOGS has incorporated the assistance of outside musicians to lend a hand. Various artists from the Brooklyn music scene - members of the CHRYSTAL STILTS and VIVIAN GIRLS, among others - contribute this time around, though the sound remains as dusted and strange as anything BLANK DOGS has done before. HARDCORE-PUNK. Tokyo legends CROW return with 2 new blasting tracks of doomy metallic Punk mayhem – “Flock of beast” and “Flock of beast 2”. Continuing off from where their killer 4 song demo (which also saw a pressing on vinyl) left off, this picks up where they left off and yet cover new ground at the same time. Its progressive but not to the point where that's a dirty word to punks. Like its more refined and the band knows which direction to take this musically. Lyrically it tackles similar topics as the demo did-religion, environmental issues and also a song about trying to not think of everything in a negative way, to be positive for a change. It kind of sounds like stuff you've heard before but all that matters is its just DARK AGES and this is far from retread HC/Punk, have nice color covers. (2009/COWABUNGA)
